My 101 year old mother died on New Year's Day
Matthew replied to medjuck's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
My prayers and sympathy go out to you and your family. -
Moonchild: The Films of Kenneth Anger. Not too bad. I would love to have a huge book that breaks down all his films. Also, a good biography, if it's not too much trouble.

It was a progressive rock movement that began in the late 70's. You can find more here. Well, I've learned something new today! Thanks Rod.

Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?
Matthew replied to Cliff Englewood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Miles Davis: The Legendary Prestige Quintet Sessions. For various reasons, about four years ago, I got rid of every Miles cd I owned. Recently, I have been revisiting Miles and discovering how much I missed his music, and this set was the catalyst -- sometimes I just take Miles' greatness for granted. It has also caused me to spend my Christmas money on the Davis Complete Columbia Recordings. What can I say? Sometimes I'm just stupid. -
This is how Google translates the passage: We found that some caskets' The Complete Columbia Album Collection (70 CD Box + 1DVD) "by Miles Davis showed defects in quality packaging. After checking our stock, we inform you that the items available are now healthy. If you order this product before December 18, you will receive an email telling you how to do to exchange your box for free if he would present defects. Thank you. So, trusting in the French, I went ahead and ordered the set for $225.27, which is a great buy.

There's a note on their page for this set (in French of course) that seems to translate that any box ordered from them after December 18th are the "good" sets. Perhaps one of the French speaking board members can verify that, but that's what a web translator indicates. Thanks Eric, that's kind of what my terrible french was making out. Think I'll go ahead and order the set, I have zero Miles in my collection right now, so this is an ideal way to get back in the game.
-
So, if you order this set from Europe (Amazonfr) you will get the "new set?" Correct? I ask because I want this set and Amazon France is $100 cheaper than the US.

James Gurley of Big Brother and the Holding Company
Matthew replied to randyhersom's topic in Miscellaneous Music
It's too bad Allen that you can't get it published, I'm sure it would be a great read. Nice idea about the blog also, I enjoy your more lucid moments (and lesser ones also!). -
Arnold Schoenberg's Journey by Allen Shawn. Very interesting book, I'll have to buy some Schoenberg cds and have a listen.

James Gurley of Big Brother and the Holding Company
Matthew replied to randyhersom's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Amen to that! Too often it's the liners that give the history of the era, and I'm always suspicious of how people remember the rock era of 1963-1969. Maybe one of these days someone will be able to write a good, insightful, account of rock during the 1960's. -
Who's getting a Mosaic gift card under their tree?
Matthew replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'm still thinking about getting the Artie Shaw Mosaic, even though I have 90% of the stuff already. However, the Jazz Crusaders or the Anthony Braxton look tempting also. Decisions, decisions... -
James Gurley of Big Brother and the Holding Company
Matthew replied to randyhersom's topic in Miscellaneous Music
That all my be true, but my contention is that, every biography I've read of the guitar players from that era, it is near unanimous that the two major influences were Jeff Beck & Eric Clapton. They were the ones people listened to and based their playing off. Gurley did have some great solos, but if you weren't in on the San Francisco scene, how would you know? Anyway, I don't want to empty my bladder pissing on someone's grave -- Gurley did major work, and his passing is a loss. RIP -

I hope Gurley truly rests in peace, but the above quote -- what bs -
According to an ESPN report: I really would hate to see Brandon Morrow go, I think he has the talent to be a very good starting pitcher. That also would make the second no.1 Mariner daft pick to be traded, with Phillippe Aumont going in the Lee trade. Jack Zduriencik is really cleaning out everything that Bill Bavasi left behind.

Off topic, but Rod, it's nice seeing you post again, I missed your thoughts. -
The Source: The Untold Story of Father Yod, Yo Ha Wa 13, And The Source Family. Written by Isis Aquarian, who was one of Father Yod's many wives and historian of the Source Family. Interesting story of Los Angeles in the early part of the 1970's, which in some ways was a stranger era than anything in the 60's. It's sad, funny, inspirational, and frustrating, all at the same time. Just a story about a lot of lost people looking for purpose in their lives, and found it in Jim Baker, aka, Father Yod. I always find these stories amazing -- a number of these people show up from the Mid-West, and after a day, they hook up somehow with The Source Family. Nice cd included with the book. Still, it all left me with a sad feeling.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
Matthew replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Oscar Peterson. Disk two. My first listen, as I bought this set this morning, and I love it. Great, swinging music. It made me order the Canadian box thingy. -
Went to Amoeba's today to get myself a Christmas present, and I found great prices on these two pristine used Oscar Peterson box sets: Clef/Mercury Studio Recordings of the Oscar Peterson Trio (1951-1953) Mosaic Records Debut: The Celf/Mercury Duo Recordings 1949-1951 Hip-O-Select Amoeba must have a new pricer for used cds because together the price came to $123.56. Usually Amoeba gives you no favors in pricing Mosaics or othe box sets of worth.

Wow!!! Thanks for the information of the Hep cd coming out, I didn't hear that. You're right, that is very exciting news.

It's the continuous Christmas music that sets my teeth on edge, jeesh, I absolutely cannot stand "holiday music" in any manner. The words to 99% of it is on the level crap that is frozen to MG's front lawn. Awful, awful, awful. Christmas is by far my least favorite holiday season. The day itself, and what it stands for religiously is great, but the circus that surrounds it -- Bah, humbug!

Keith Olbermann being a downer on the Milton Bradley trade for the Mariners. Mr. Buzzkill's article.

I have a copy of Shaw's The Last Recordings Vol. II: The Big Band, and it's my understanding that after the Shaw Big Band closed at the Click Club in December of 1949, they recorded thirty-five transcriptions, and this cd has only sixteen of those. I'm sorry if this has been answered here before but I don't think I read it, but are there cds that have all the music this last incarnation of the Shaw Big Band made?
