  1. Interesting mix with Hobart Smith!
  2. I would like the Henry Red Allen lp if it is still available.
  3. John Fahey has a large catalog, so here are some recommendations for albums with more blues: Blind Joe Death Death Chants, Breakdowns, and Military Waltzes Dance of Death and Other Plantation Favorites Days Have Gone By Voice of the Turtle Of Rivers and Religion Kottke, Fahey, Lang The Great Santa Barbara Oil Slick Red Cross
  4. Jeanette James and her Synco Jazzers, The Bumps (what a groove by everyone involved!) Mary Lou Williams' first records were with this group. James was the vocalist of the group, later named John Williams' Synco Jazzers. This song is instrumental. This was on Really the Blues cd 4.
  5. An important challenge of the umpires' call in last night's game between the Nationals and Rockies. Come to find out manager Matt Williams is successful in 65% of his challenges! Is there a list somewhere for the whole of MLB?
  6. Ace and Bear have done some great Cajun reissues lately.
  7. I felt that way too but whenever I tried to point out examples they were trivial. Did you notice any major ones? I was thinking of the way Daughter Maitland sang in a more modern style than those blues women who belted out songs at full volume. Good singer, but probably influenced more by Billie Holliday than Bessie Smith.
  8. Just Blues by Memphis Jazzers (on Really the Blues CD 9)
  9. Hmmm. Just as long as it's not anachronistic as on Boardwalk Empire.
  10. Good actor. RIP. I remember as a kid wondering who in the world would confuse him with Efrem Zimbalist Sr.!
  11. For me 1920s for jazz, blues, and Cajun 1950s for blues, rhythm & blues, country-western, bluegrass, rock and roll, and Cajun If I knew anything about so called "song" and "Great American Songbook" I might say something different.
  12. I was just about to say, Where are the singers?
  13. That whole series is a favorite of mine. Most of the episodes range from pretty damn good to absolutely killing. A few, not so much, but how much did you pay to see it, right? Mostly, yes, very good stuff. The Don Rickles one in particualr, I watch that one over and over, and I'm not really a "fan" of Rickles per se. The Rickles segment was great! Did you see the one with Brian Regan? My favorite one so far. "You'll need to jiggle the handle, your Excellency!" And the Convincer bit was gone gone gone!
  14. I remember what he said when he flopped hosting the Oscars. "I had no idea this thing was being televised." And when he got the Kennedy Center honors. "Now I can show my family. They think I work at a Jiffy Lube in Mexico." He did a good segment on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee: http://comediansincarsgettingcoffee.com/david-letterman-i-like-kettlecorn
  15. I remember when the flip side of mp3 singles would bleed through.
  16. Curt Gowdy said he took Casey Stengel to a bar and noticed how fast Casey drank. Casey said he always drank fast since his accident. Curt asked, you had an accident? Casey said, yeah one time I accidentally spilled my beer!
  17. Jim changed my user name from It Should be You to my real name, and I didn't lose any of my previous posts. I don't know if it was hard to do but it seems it was not technically impossible.
  18. Sounds like the Italian skater did a lovely routine and was very excited to medal. Hope I get a chance to see all that!
  19. This one is a beaut (with Kenny Burrell)
  20. For me the most thrilling event is ski jumping! Long time ago I got to see the actual Oberstdorf Austria ski jump site that was for years featured in the intro to Wide World of Sports. "The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat!" The agony of defeat line showed video of a ski jumper wipe out at Oberstdorf, from what I understand. The strangest event is long distance skiing then stopping to shoot at targets. Can anyone huffing and puffing from the exertion of a marathon ski session really shoot straight? Those contestants are awesome specimens! Oh, and the flying little girl in the opening ceremony was fantastic. She should be a star! The people bent over and moving fast was a pretty good artistic representation of the industrialization under Communism. They put a lot of thought into the whole opening ceremony history of Russia and it was kind of strange to say the least. Not sure how they could have done it better (from their point of view).
  21. List please! Good luck with next recording session!
