  1. Fantastic bassist! I saw him last year with this group: The new one is also with Tommy Smith and the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra: By the way, I spent quite a bit of time with Tommy over the last few days as he was performing with his KARMA group here and getting in some golf at Oak Hill.
  2. Have No Fear is one of my all time favorite tenor saxophone recordings. I'm gonna pull that one out right now!
  3. Ted, all you have to do is sign up and add a credit card. It works for me. By the way, Thanks Jim!!
  4. Me three. That's show business! I think that Larry's very lucid explanation says it all.
  5. Forgive me Jim, but could you post a link to make it easier for the computer challenged?

  7. I'll see this band in a couple of weeks, but minus Kimbrough and Locke, and look forward to it. I haven't hard the recording at all, and it will be interesting to hear how Ryan pulled off those delicate and "individual" Evans voicings. Not a easy task.
  8. Anytime, Bubba! And yes, Real Jazz is excruciatingly mainstream/conservative. More than I imagined. Sirius does have a porn talk radio show called Spice Radio, so it's not like they think their audiences ears are fragile.
  9. My new Lincoln MKX has all sorts of bells and whistles ( it's almost a computer on wheels) including Sirius and a cd player that plays one at a time. The sound system is pretty damn hot, and playing the cds sounds much better than Sirius. I'll listen to cds until the end, I guess. The car also has inputs for any kind of device (including a computer) that you could ever think of. You can voice command all sorts of things, any type of news, stats, car functions, Blutooth, navigation etc. etc. etc. By the time I figure everything out, it'll be time for a new car! It looks exactly like this:
  10. Happy Birthday, Jim!! Thanks for all that you do!
  11. What about this one: George Russell book
  12. Chewy, you kill me!
  13. I have it on both vinyl and CD. I have a soft spot for "Calling Miss Khadija".
  14. I worked as a barback/busboy in a club when I was 14 & 15 called Duffy's Backstage. The first night I worked the band playing was Miles' with Wayne and Tony and I guess Herbie and Ron ( don't recall exactly). I was emergency extra help because of the crowds during that run and stayed on from then. It might of been that the next band that worked there after that was Cannonball ( and quickly after that BB King). Those bands that played there were a major impact on me, not only because of the music and the energy level, but also the musicians themselves with their personalities/ lifestyle.
  15. Mingus was born in Nogales, but grew up in LA. Here's one of my photos:
  16. I remember that the vinyl lp was the Holy Grail for collectors. Maybe the original still is. To me, it was always "Jackie's record", if you know what I mean.
  17. Here's a interview with Earl Palmer Earl talks about Elvin Jones' solo in the movie "Zacharias" and how they lost the sound, so the producers called in Earl to overdub it. So what you see is Elvin, but what you hear is Earl.
  18. As far as one or two sessions, there have been some interesting ones mentioned. Allen already brought up Al Gafa: And then there's Michael Howell: Chuck Wayne made more than one session, but not that many, I believe:
  19. Pete, my daughter's boyfriend bought this one yesterday and I thought the same thing. It's a odd grouping os songs, to be sure.
  20. Gilbert Castellanos is a mainstay in San Diego.
  21. Yep, that's him. About half of Ringolevio is great, though mostly fantasy, by the time it moves on to San Francisco it drones on, and on. just re-read it recently. You may want to look here, Laz: 1%Free v2's photostream There are some photos and memorabilia.
  22. Happy Birthday, Flurin!!
