Why are these kind of gigs even organized?
marcello replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Jim's right. This kind of programing, usually with no rehearsal, brings a certain customer in the door. And because there is little thought, planning or conception, beyond the "tribute' hook, it's boring like Tom says. -
Wayne Shorter's Without A Net on the Blue Note label
marcello replied to EyeSpeech's topic in New Releases
Well Jim, I know I'm in the minority here about this, but I would like to not only hear the direction that this band spends most of their time in, but also I'd like to hear a little ( or a lot ) of fire. For me, I especially would like to hear more variety in tempo and rhythm. I think a drummer like Johnathan Blake would be a better drummer, who can play with a lot of color and can lay it down. Clarence Penn would be great for the same reasons. Terreon Gully would be tremendous. I've never been a fan of Perez. He's a fine musician but he is not a complete pianist for me and I get bored of pianistic tricks after a while, and he can go on an and on with that. Geoffrey Keezer would be the ultimate pianist for Wayne's ( or anyone's ) group. He can take the music anywhere while keeping it interesting ( and deep) and he also can put a little needed ass ( in a rhythmic sense). David Budway would be more than interesting also. No problems with Patitucci, for me. I have to admit that all of the musicians I've suggested are friends of mine but they also fit the bill as complete musicians for the band. Frankly, there is a lot of time that passes where it seems that that the band is going in in different directions and not playing as a unit or at least coming together and serving the music, if you know what I mean. When I'm listening to this band I find myself cherry picking points of interest in the fog. -

Chuck beat me to it. Call me a you know what, but I never liked this band (What I mean is with some other musicians, it could be much more), and I've heard them a few times. -

A wonderful artist and man. Once, a long time ago, I gave him a photo that I took of him. He took me backstage and we have a lovely conversation that night and several nights during the week that he was playing at the club. He could play some stuff, especially when he had a mute in his trumpet, that reminded me of Miles with more chops. You could really hear the influence he had on Miles. That first night, I gave him the photo nicely mounted and matted, and he when saw that I didn't sign it, he demanded that I put a signature to it, so that when people saw it they new who the photographer was. He could exude a unique mixture of sweetness, joy and more than a little toughness/badness from the stage and in person.

Chinese restaurateurs are forever grateful for that long standing Jewish tradition! Happy Holidays Jeff!

No, the other Larry Hancock ( R&B, who has passed) is not the same as the drummer who still is in the Bay Area, as last I heard.
-
I think you want The Complete Bud Powell on Verve with a booklet with comments/Conversations about the music by Barry Harris and Michael Weiss It has everything but the 1/10/47 session on Roost.

Carter Jefferson is on one live cut ( from 1993) playing "Ascension" on drummer Nasar Abedey's "Mirage" http://www.nasarabadey.com/mirage.html and he is killin'!! The rest of the tracks are great too.

I saw Joe Dukes, who was really great, with Jack McDuff sometime in the early 90's. He passed away in '92.

I wonder is he is the same person as Leroy W. Henderson, the African American photographer?

Here's a "backstage" encounter for you! Overwhelmed, I was. I also once took a piss next to Woody Allen. No, I didn't look.

It could be Jose' Torres.

Clifford Brown at the Cotton Club... ??
marcello replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
From what I understand is that LaRue lent out the tapes to someone and that person made at least some copies. The Brown Estate has all of the original tapes. I don't know how Max became the "producer". Maybe that was his fee for having them released. From what I understand, the Lonehill tape sounds poor, and must come from a copy with no studio fixes. Hold on to you money until the better thing comes along with all of the music and then some. -

Chuck Lampkin was from Buffalo, and later became a TV reporter there, so that track is probably from there. A better career choice for both him and us. All I can say is wait for a better release of this material (and more) in the future. -
What live music are you going to see tonight?

Please say hi to Ed Howard for me. -
Pizza Express is a sort of "high end" chain of pizza houses, with beautiful, stylish decor. The one in Soho has jazz, although though these days, musicians play for the door. No guarantee.

Re: CTI - The sound was good, the vinyl was fairly crappy.
