  1. Chuck beat me to it. Call me a you know what, but I never liked this band (What I mean is with some other musicians, it could be much more), and I've heard them a few times.
  2. It could be worse. Have fun and Happy Birthday to Ann.
  3. Lew Soloff: Yesterdays (1986) A really stunning effort with original compositions by Soloff and features Mike Stern (g), Charnett Moffett (b), and Elvin Jones (d). 1.Yesterdays - Harbach, Kern 9:46 2.Barbara - Silver 8:55 3.Beautiful Mimi - Soloff 3:37 4.All Blues - Davis 8:59 5.Thaddeus - Soloff 6:28 6.Little Laura - Soloff 6:00 7.Antigua - Prince 7:21
  4. That sounds wonderful, Peter! W. Eugene Smith was one of the great ones.
  5. A wonderful artist and man. Once, a long time ago, I gave him a photo that I took of him. He took me backstage and we have a lovely conversation that night and several nights during the week that he was playing at the club. He could play some stuff, especially when he had a mute in his trumpet, that reminded me of Miles with more chops. You could really hear the influence he had on Miles. That first night, I gave him the photo nicely mounted and matted, and he when saw that I didn't sign it, he demanded that I put a signature to it, so that when people saw it they new who the photographer was. He could exude a unique mixture of sweetness, joy and more than a little toughness/badness from the stage and in person.
  6. Birdland, on opening night on December 15,1949. From the left, Max Kaminsky on trumpet, Lester Young on tenor saxophone, a nearly-hidden George Wettling on drums, Hot Lips Page on trumpet, Charlie Parker on alto saxophone, Lennie Tristano on piano.
  7. I couldn't find one for sale, but here's some information http://jazzstation-oblogdearnaldodesouteiros.blogspot.com/2009/04/cd-of-day-cti-all-stars-live-in-munich.html
  8. Chinese restaurateurs are forever grateful for that long standing Jewish tradition! Happy Holidays Jeff!
  9. No, the other Larry Hancock ( R&B, who has passed) is not the same as the drummer who still is in the Bay Area, as last I heard.
  10. I think you want The Complete Bud Powell on Verve with a booklet with comments/Conversations about the music by Barry Harris and Michael Weiss It has everything but the 1/10/47 session on Roost.
  11. Carter Jefferson is on one live cut ( from 1993) playing "Ascension" on drummer Nasar Abedey's "Mirage" http://www.nasarabadey.com/mirage.html and he is killin'!! The rest of the tracks are great too.
  12. I saw Joe Dukes, who was really great, with Jack McDuff sometime in the early 90's. He passed away in '92.
  13. I wonder is he is the same person as Leroy W. Henderson, the African American photographer?
  14. Yes, this one: This is the last Brubeck that I ever bought. 01 – Truth 02 – Unknown Woman 03 – Koto Song 04 – Take Five 05 – Rotterdam Blues & Sweet Georgia Brown
  15. Here's a "backstage" encounter for you! Overwhelmed, I was. I also once took a piss next to Woody Allen. No, I didn't look.
  16. From what I understand is that LaRue lent out the tapes to someone and that person made at least some copies. The Brown Estate has all of the original tapes. I don't know how Max became the "producer". Maybe that was his fee for having them released. From what I understand, the Lonehill tape sounds poor, and must come from a copy with no studio fixes. Hold on to you money until the better thing comes along with all of the music and then some.
  17. Chuck Lampkin was from Buffalo, and later became a TV reporter there, so that track is probably from there. A better career choice for both him and us. All I can say is wait for a better release of this material (and more) in the future.
  18. Pizza Express is a sort of "high end" chain of pizza houses, with beautiful, stylish decor. The one in Soho has jazz, although though these days, musicians play for the door. No guarantee.
  19. That's a lot of really heavy lifting there Jim, to explain some really boring lightweight music! Just one man's opinion, you know.
  20. Re: CTI - The sound was good, the vinyl was fairly crappy.
  21. I've recently heard a live tape of the Brown/Roach Quintet (w/Sonny Rollins) that has never been available. In fact, it's never been out of the owners hands until recently. The sad truth is, although the tape has very good sound, there are incomplete selections. In fact, only two selections are complete. The owner may not sell since he can't fathom why his price can't be met because of the incomplete songs, so it may never see the light of day.
