  1. Sayyd Abdul Al-Khabyy, not one of my favorite Gillespie sidemen, I'm afraid. He used to have the annoying habit of giving the audience a little salute after each solo. His son Nasyr, also played drums with Birks along with his father.
  2. Windham Hill Plays Monk
  3. Happy Birthday Jim, and thanks for all of your hard work and dedication.
  4. Jack - Hawk playing Greensleeves is so soulful and so powerful, that it belongs in the realm of High Art. Yes, with a capital H and A! Tommy Flanagan, Coleman Hawkins, Major Holley & Eddie Locke
  5. Charlie Smith's solo on "Hot House" (with Charlie Parker) The great drummer Charlie Smith is unknown to most musicians. He appears on the only televised performance of Charlie Parker’s, along with Sandy Block (bass), Dick Hyman (piano) and Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet), playing "Hot House" during the "Down Beat" award ceremonies in 1952. Charlie Smith was 25 years old at that time. His playing is brilliant. The three solos he plays are traded fours with Gillespie and Parker. The form of "Hot House", a tune based on "What is this thing called love", is AABA. Smith plays the first four bars of the traded fours. The last A is used to play the melody to end the tune. Please note how he uses the butt end of the stick to play explosive accents on the hi-hats. It is important to notice that Smith was left-handed and that he used a small set, which consisted only of bass drum, snare, hi-hat and one cymbal. The solo is very dynamic. I suggest, as with all transcriptions, to check it against the original work which can be found on the video "Celebrating Bird" and on some other Charlie Parker documentaries
  6. Another view of the Seattle work. Here's something to think about: When Henry Moore's mother developed a painful case of sciatica, her dutiful son took to rubbing her hip to ease the discomfort. Years later, Moore remarked that nearly all of his sculpture was fundamentally about his mother's hip.
  7. Seattle Public Library: Vancouver: Queen Elizabeth Park

  10. ..and a favorite record of mine. Thanks, Chuck.
  11. Not to be a drag but, I think Kimati Dinizulu leaves something to be desired in a Sonny Rollins concert.
  12. You can always get up to date here: Joe Locke It's been a long, long tome since he cut his hair. This is a new one coming up from the concert that the photo above was taken:
  13. Hmmmmm...take a look at this page: Central Park's Harlem Meer and this: Virtual Tour of Harlem Meer With the map, Chris can pinpoint the place where he found them. Tell us Sherlock!
  14. I've known Danny for more that 30 years, but does he still count? If so, he's the only one I've met.
  15. Chris, I'm sure that lake is part of a storm water detention system, so it would rise and fall with the seasons and rainfall. That said, they could be old dock pilings.
  16. I think Terreon Gully is one of the new "sound innovators" on the trap set. He dosn't use a sound delay to get that effect, I'm not sure about the two sticks technique, but it's all done with his hands. You can hear it on Keezer's Wildcrafted cd, and you can see it for your self in NYC when he plays with the Joe Locke / Geoffrey Keezer Group at Dizzy's June 6-11. Terreon Gully
  17. Yes Jim, the same band as above is playing.

    Mark Elf

Mark is not only a master guitarist, but a real Soul Brother who continues to do much for other artists in his capacity as a radio promotion man. No bullshit and a big heart. His new recording is Liftoff: You can get it here: Mark Elf''s CD Page
  23. Re: Airplay and Playlists: Most stations these days are being monitored by Media Guide so there is less hanky panky by program directors, and that's good for the artists and the stations. The JazzWeek chart combines both since not all markets have a "listening monitor" in their area, but a vast majority of the "playlists" are generated by Media Guide.

  25. Allen, did you use Mike Marciano or Joe Marciano at Systems Two? Both have big ears and are quick on their feet. Their studios are beautiful.
