jazzbo Posted July 22, 2012 Report Posted July 22, 2012 Quite by accident I came across this album in a second-hand store, "Introducing the Barry Kiener Trio,"[Phoenix Jazz Records] recorded in 1980 in Rochester, N.Y. I was looking at used books and, beside the books were a few records, most of which were country and other misc. However, sticking out like a wart on the end of a witch's nose was this album, in almost mint condition. It's playing now and it is beautiful. The trio consisted of Barry Kiener [apparently dead too soon], on piano, Tom Warrington on bass and Dan D'Imperio on drums. [yes, that Dan]. The track list is: Donna Lee This Is All I Ask I Should Care Milenburg Joys Our Delight I Only Have Eyes For You The Right To Love Everything I Love K.O. Blues Kiener was a really wonderful jazz pianist. A Bob Porter production I don't have - indeed never heard of!!!! Interesting tracklist. Playing Jimmy Smith - House party - BN (Pathe Marconi) MG I have a copy of a tape of Keener playing Danny's dad's piano in the D'Imperio living room. Great player.Right now one of the two Quartet lps with Budd Johnson in this excellent five lp box set. Quote

jeffcrom Posted July 23, 2012 Report Posted July 23, 2012 Whitey Mitchell Sextette (ABC-Paramount). 7/4 reminded me, elsewhere on the internets, that today is Steve Lacy's birthday. I immediately pulled this one off the shelves, as I hadn't heard it for awhile. Mr. Lacy was only 21 when this album was made, and as on most of his early sideman recordings, he is by far the most interesting soloist. Quote
paul secor Posted July 23, 2012 Report Posted July 23, 2012 Walt Dickerson & Jimmi Johnsun - I Hear You John - (Steeplechase) Elmo Hope 'Here's Hope' Celebrity/VSOP reissue) OK - Both of you are reminding me of records that I have in my collection and haven't listened to in years, and you're both making me guilty about buying new music when I have already have more than enough to listen to. An old, old story. Quote
jeffcrom Posted July 23, 2012 Report Posted July 23, 2012 Stan Getz - Groovin' With Getz (United). A really awful 1969 issue of tracks from the same series of 1947 concerts that produced the Way Out Wardell album. The pressing is really cheap, and Getz only plays on one track. But there is some excellent music here. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted July 23, 2012 Report Posted July 23, 2012 Playing my newie. As I'd thought, when I got this one this morning, the centimetre or so of dust, bits of white paint (apparently) and general shit cleaned up nicely with an oily rag. Listening to it now and enjoying it tremendously! One wonders why someone who bought this would leave it to get into such a disgusting shape, but keep it for thirty-something years without bothering to play it. I didn't ask Kelly's guvnor where he got it from, because I didn't think of it 'til I got it home. Well, it wasn't expensive and it plays fantastic. Not to mention the music, which is all it should be. MG Quote

jeffcrom Posted July 23, 2012 Report Posted July 23, 2012 Now Dudu Pukwana & Spear - In the townships - Caroline I love that album - my copy is a later reissue. I think I said in this thread (some months ago) that it's one of the most joyous albums I've ever heard. JSngry Posted July 23, 2012 Report Posted July 23, 2012 One of my most favorite, perhaps the most favorite, Maynard Ferguson albums. Just like my old copy (which I still need to return to my high-school classmate's older brother, assuming that he's still alive and wants it back after 40 years, neither of which I am assuming) except that the vinyl is really clean, so the sound just POPS out of the speakers rather than frizzles out (and it was like that when I got it). This is my first experience with clean 1960s Mainstream vinyl. It ain't bad at all, I'll tell you that. Quote

JSngry Posted July 24, 2012 Report Posted July 24, 2012 Recently won a sealed copy on eBay for about the same price as a new one would've been back in the day. Gotta carpe diem on that deal. Hardly "definitive"...Thad's writing had pretty much maxed out (no pun intended re:the album's dedication) in terms of really new ideas (although there's a few spots where the thickness seems to be a newer, different type of thick), the whole thing is definitely entering "second generation" territory, but....eh...it's still the real Thad & the real Mel, ya' know? It don't suck. But the fold-out/fold-open liner notes...good LORD, even with glasses, I'll never be able to read these things...talk about cramming a lot of info into a limited amount of space...which, come to think of it, is kinda like Thad's writing. But I can hear a lot easier these days than I can read. Quote
JSngry Posted July 24, 2012 Report Posted July 24, 2012 This record is fast pissing me off. I mean, for $2.99, I thought I'd just be mildly annoyed and maybe a little appreciative of the cleverness & professionalism involved. But no, this thing is PISSING ME OFF. I mean, Oscar Peterson couldn't help it, he was just being Oscar Peterson. But this motherfucker KNEW better and did it anyway. God bless Claire Fischer, that's all I can say. Quote
JSngry Posted July 24, 2012 Report Posted July 24, 2012 Taken as both a purgative of the previous LP and as a delight in its ownself: The more I listen to this guy, the more convinced I am that he was all the "madmen" of jazz pianists rolled into one minus any mental/behavioral baggage, which makes him the most dangerous kind of poker player, the kind that has all your money before you even play a hand. Jeez, what this guy played...crazymad BRILLIANT. BTW, my copy of this comes complete with a sticker on the front that says: From the Collection of SOCK HETTLER Winnetka, Illinois That's about as many "oh MY!"s as come with the music. Quote
