Pim Posted April 10, 2020 Report Posted April 10, 2020 A dream line-up with Cecil Bridgewater, Onaje Allan Gumbs, Cecil McBee and Joe Chambers. The record is good but nothing mind-blowing. Rest in peace mr. Gumbs: you will be missed. Quote
jazzcorner Posted April 10, 2020 Report Posted April 10, 2020 (edited) Sorry its CD's but nevertheless the best Kenton band in the 1950ies IMHO. Edited April 10, 2020 by jazzcorner Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted April 10, 2020 Report Posted April 10, 2020 Eric Kloss - Essence (Muse). I swear that Buster Williams is playing an electric bass but it could just be the way they recorded it. Pianist Mickey Tucker is listed with "appears courtesy of Bluenote Records". Tucker never recorded as a leader for Blue Note Records that I am aware of. Was there a Bluenote Records as well? As I listen to this, I am reminded that I'm not a huge Marvin "Hannibal" Peterson fan. Quote

Kevin Bresnahan Posted April 10, 2020 Report Posted April 10, 2020 Next up - Booker Ervin - The In Between (Blue Note). Not my favorite Ervin date but it has it's moments. One of the few records I have with Bobby Few at the keys. Quote

Tucker never recorded as a leader for Blue Note Records that I am aware of. Tucker was the co-leader of the New Heritage Keyboard Quartet (with Sir Roland Hanna). They released one LP for Blue Note in 1973. I bet that's why there's a BN credit for Tucker on Kloss' LP. ********** I think Bodies' Warmth is O.K. But Kloss made another record with Barry Miles, Together (Muse, 1976), that's much better, IMO. It's more stripped down, unvarnished. A duo LP. Edited April 10, 2020 by HutchFan Quote

It was a very weird choice to break apart "messengers" by separating it the way it was done on this cover. Strangely enough, I never noticed it until Aric brought it up here many years ago. Now I see it every time. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 11, 2020 Report Posted April 11, 2020 Ha -- that's wild. I mean, now that you say it, I see it, but never would have thought to look. Quote

I bet I looked at this cover a hundred times and never saw it and then when Aric brought it up... it might've even been on the Blue Note forums... I was like, "What the heck?" Now I can't un-see it. There was never to my knowledge such a kind of discussion among the serious jazzfans. But it is obvious that you can bring up the strangest theories and you will find some followers. To think Blue Note has such Ideas when issueing LP's is simply sick. Edited April 11, 2020 by jazzcorner scans added Quote

Of course they were not designed with this in mind (these are the reissue covers anyway). But I guess I see what Aric was talking about, even if it's not true. Quote
HutchFan Posted April 12, 2020 Report Posted April 12, 2020 One of the LPs in Stitt's series of quartet recordings for Muse in the 1970s featuring Barry Harris and Sam Jones. By an odd coincidence, every record in the series featured a different drummer. Billy Higgins is on this one. Wonderful. 👍 Quote

Vol. 3 is not a reissue but has the same pictures?? I think you see more than I do. Have about 100 BN's. Never came to my minmd there was a rassistic intention or sublime meaning in the cover fotos. I think I will end the topic here. W. Edited April 12, 2020 by jazzcorner Quote
