Kevin Bresnahan Posted January 16, 2021 Report Posted January 16, 2021 Lou Donaldson - Alligator Boogaloo (Blue Note). This is the 80th anniversary pressing. Nicely done by Kevin Gray and pressed at Pallas in Germany. Quote
HutchFan Posted January 16, 2021 Report Posted January 16, 2021 NP: Chico Freeman - Peaceful Heart, Gentle Spirit (Contemporary, 1980) with James Newton, Jay Hoggard, Kenny Kirkland, Buster Williams, and Billy Hart Every bit as good as you'd expect, given the line-up. I'm pleased because I'm able to listen to vinyl again. My stereo system has been unavailable because we installed some new carpet in the basement a couple months ago. Everything had to be dis-assembled and moved elsewhere. Between work, family commitments, a presidential election, a senate run-off election, and a Capitol Hill riot (plus all the attendant news watching), I haven't had the energy or inclination to put it all back together. But I finally did today. Here's what it looks like now: Equipment-wise, it's nothing spectacular. Mostly old but reliable stuff. Even so, I've got to say that music sounds SO MUCH better on this system compared to a smartphone & earbuds or my little Bose Bluetooth device. 16 minutes ago, bresna said: Lou Donaldson - Alligator Boogaloo (Blue Note). Pim Posted January 17, 2021 Report Posted January 17, 2021 @Rabshakeh Pretty good record this is but nothing that blows you away probably. It’s a bit weird in places: some funk, freebop and spoken word. Something that needs a few listens. But definitely interesting music! Quote

A good example of thie rewards of this board as I would never have come across it if Jeffcrom (whatever happened to him?) hadn't posted it years ago. I need to listen to it, thanks for the reminder. I'm playing LP 1 of this 'I Talk With The Spirits' is in my top ten all time Jazz LPs. This is my first listen to this remaster. It sounds fabulous 19 minutes ago, Pim said: @Rabshakeh Pretty good record this is but nothing that blows you away probably. It’s a bit weird in places: some funk, freebop and spoken word. Indeed! I miss jeffcrom, learned a lot from him, both from his posts here and from his blog... and yes, it took a while until I saw a copy of this album, and without this board I would never have known that this something I must have ... I honestly think that you can't go wrong with Tapscott, I've never heard a poor album by him yet, or even an average one There's a new 3LP issue due on Nimbus West which will be a 'must buy' https://www.discogs.com/Horace-Tapscott-Pan-Afrikan-Peoples-Arkestra-Live-At-Century-City-Playhouse-9979/release/16330602 Promo here Good to see you still have a nice bit of spare storage in that nice looking unit. What a great musician! Memories of attending Tapscott’s ‘wake’ performance in LA. It was billed as a fund raising tribute to help him with hospital treatment. They announced on the day from the stage that he had sadly passed away just the night before so it turned out to be a memorial. As well as the Arkestra there was Pharoah Sanders, Vi Redd and the Watts Prophets in the lineup that I can remember. Gerald Wilson and his family were sat right behind me. Quote
