Niko Posted November 4, 2009 Report Posted November 4, 2009 Miles Davis & his Tuba Band (!), Pre-Birth of the Cool (Cicala) The 1948 Royal Roost recordings. Still on that Birth of the Cool theme! seems like you badly need the sonny criss Quote
jeffcrom Posted November 4, 2009 Report Posted November 4, 2009 Miles Davis & his Tuba Band (!), Pre-Birth of the Cool (Cicala) The 1948 Royal Roost recordings. Still on that Birth of the Cool theme! I suggest that it might be worth seeking out the "Complete Birth of the Cool" CD reissue that combines the studio tracks with all the live recordings. It includes the announcements, the short theme that is not on the Cicala LP, and more complete versions of several of the tracks. I kept my RVG edition for the sound on the studio tracks, though. Many thanks for that, jeffcrom! Yes, perhaps it's time to move on again. So far, I've had this stuff on 10" Capitol LP, 12" Capitol LP, Cicala LP and Capitol CD - mind you, that took 50 years! A lifetime of cool! Quote

sidewinder Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 Damn, nice one! Thanks - I love this LP and isn't the sleeve/label concept by 'Trane for the AU4950 just about the coolest thing ever? It features, deservedly I think, in the recent 'Freedom, Rhythm & Sound' book. I've got a backup Impulse copy for 'everyday listening' Quote
Clunky Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 (edited) Joe Harriott - Jazz for moderns ( Gearbox) ex BBC 1962 - heavy vinyl sounding very good. Anyone have their Tubby Hayes release ? edit to add that this a 45 rpm 12 inch with 4 tracks, about 12 minutes in total but with the classic line up of Harriott and Shake Keane Edited November 6, 2009 by Clunky Quote

sidewinder Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 Roland Kirk with Jack McDuff 'Kirk's Work' (Prestige, yellow label) Great minds think alike ! Just spinning 'Slightly Latin', this time the UK Mercury pressing in the 'Limelight Series'. In stereo too - first time I've heard this version (great). The Limelight LP I have is in mono and I'm pretty sure that the version on the Kirk Mercury set is also mono. Lost master? Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 Henry Mancini - Mr. Lucky - RCA (70s yellow/orange Dynaflex pressing, stereo). Sounds amazing for a Dynaflex pressing. "Softly" is stunning. Dedicated to my late cat Brigitte who went to Rainbow Bridge on Oct. 28, 2009. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 Lucky is a true cosmopolite. He has been everywhere, has seen and done just about everything, and knows everybody. He has a suave, sophisticated, polished and international demeanor. His adventures may involve anyone from a bowery bum to a deposed king. He's a mystery man, intriguing to women, admired and envied by men. Quote

sidewinder Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 Donald Byrd - Blackjack - BN, unknown recent reissue. Scorpio pressing? How does it sound? Was eyeing up a 'Mr Shing-a-Ling' from same source this afternoon and came near to trying it out. Quote

Anyone have their Tubby Hayes release ? edit to add that this a 45 rpm 12 inch with 4 tracks, about 12 minutes in total but with the classic line up of Harriott and Shake Keane still spinning this , it's really good and the sound is superb, slightly more mainstream compared to Freeform and Abstract, I've ordered the Tubby session too, given its limited edition status I guess if I wait for a review it won't be available Quote
