king ubu Posted January 22, 2013 Report Posted January 22, 2013 It's a nice one. They could have added another album (Cohn's "Mr. Music", but then it has only Newman and not Green). While there's some sameness, there's plenty of nice stuff going on, mainly by Cohn and Newman of course, but trombonists Frank Rehak and Urbie Green have their spots, too, and Henry Coker (on the Green album only, alas) made my head turn several times ... also Gene Quill on Cohn's "Jazz Workshop" album, which closes the set (and I think is it's highlight). Not essential stuff by any stretch, not even very good all the way through - but enjoyable, Basie-inspired, swinging small group jazz. Quote

It's solid and won't disappoint but won't set the hills on fire either. But then that was never its intention Quote

jeffcrom Posted January 27, 2013 Report Posted January 27, 2013 Louis Armstrong - Complete Decca Sessions (1935-1946); disc 4, with "I Double Dare You," "When the Saints Go Marching In" (the first jazz recording), and "The Song is Ended" & "My Walking Stick" with the Mills Brothers - all some of my favorite Louis sides. erwbol Posted February 4, 2013 Report Posted February 4, 2013 I'm really enjoying listening to this music by session. Yesterday Black Fire, this afternoon the Smoke Stack session (noticeably better sound than the Connoisseur). Quote
