wesbed Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 Randy Weston discs 2 & 3 The Randy Weston box is quite a varied set. All the music is unique and good. Weston has, to my ears, his very own unique style of playing. The third disk grows with time. Quote
Brad Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 The Joe Pass Box. McCann is awesome on his sets. Quote

king ubu Posted January 16, 2006 Report Posted January 16, 2006 Played Anita CD3 yesterday (but why has taht liner notes writing guy to complain that much about Bregman's writing? It's not that bad, in my opinion...) Forgot to mention that some time ago I finally played the whole Byrd/Adams - great set, with the highlight being the two albums programmed last (CD3/4 and CD4). Good stuff, definitely, and judging by those 1961 dates quite astonishing that Byrd (still/always?) had such a relatively bad reputation. Quote
mailman Posted January 16, 2006 Report Posted January 16, 2006 The Complete Recordings of The Port Of Harlem Jazzmen-Mosaic MR1-108. My first Mosaic, purchased in 1984. Beautiful Sidney Bechet. This was my introduction to the wonderful guitarist Tedd Bunn. Quote
GA Russell Posted January 16, 2006 Report Posted January 16, 2006 (edited) I'm listening to the Pacific Jazz CD Trio, which combines a Russ Freeman 1953 date and a Richard Twardzik 1954 date. I believe that the Freeman date was recorded the same day as (and following) the trio's backing Chet Baker. In college I had the Twardzik date on an LP entitled The Last Set. I found it in a trash can! I had never heard of him before, but I retrieved it to give it a listen, and never threw it away. Anyway, I believe that both of these are included in the Pacific Jazz Trios Mosaic Select. (edit for typo) Edited January 16, 2006 by GA Russell Quote

I can never work that one out either ! Just the other day lstening to 'Fuego' vinyl I was pondering this very issue. Maybe future generations will be more sympathetic. That 'Byrd/Adams' set is a beauty. Quote

That 'Byrd/Adams' set is a beauty. Well, you may remember that I consider "Fuego" ok, but not great... I don't find it nearly as compelling as the 1961 dates, to be honest (same for "Byrd in Flight"). Then "Free Form" for me again has a very special vibe. And even though them Penguin moldy figs (haha!) don't like the with Voices albums, that one is a great album to my ears, too! Quote
