gmonahan Posted September 9, 2006 Report Posted September 9, 2006 The very last cd in the Venuti/Lang set, which I hadn't gotten around to listening to for a while after I got the set. Turns out there is some wonderfully funny, goofy nonsense toward the end when these characters were cutting up in the studio (including a tune they entitled "Non-Skid Manure"!) Quote
ASNL77 Posted September 10, 2006 Report Posted September 10, 2006 Miles Davis & Gil Evans LP 6. Great set. It's been a while since I listened to this. Quote
Kyo Posted September 11, 2006 Report Posted September 11, 2006 Just listening to the Stanley Turrentine set. I re-equalized the first disc, removing some of the harsh treble. To my ears it sounds just about fine now. And the music itself is GREAT! Quote
John Tapscott Posted September 11, 2006 Report Posted September 11, 2006 Maynard Ferguson - Complete Roulette Disc 1 - listening my way through all 10 CD's. Quote

MG This one's really worth the wait - I'm listening to disc 8, the session with Don Patterson and Paul Weeden followed by the latin date with Thad Jones. Nice change of pace from the quartets! Quote

Soulstation1 Posted September 12, 2006 Author Report Posted September 12, 2006 MG that stitt/patterson session wasn't released on a cd? Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted September 12, 2006 Report Posted September 12, 2006 (edited) MG that stitt/patterson session wasn't released on a cd? Nope - first reissue as far as I know since it came out 40 odd years ago. Don't think it even came out on LP in Japan. MG Edited September 12, 2006 by The Magnificent Goldberg Quote

woofy Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 The Jazz Crusaders set. It arrived yesterday. Quote
tranemonk Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 So whaddya think? Elvin Jones, discs 1-4 Quote
ASNL77 Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 Joe Pass CD1. Waow1 I bought this set last month and I am loving it. I haven't got the Django set but this may be my favourite guitar Mosaic set. A real gem! Quote
Ron S Posted September 14, 2006 Report Posted September 14, 2006 Elvin Jones, discs 5-8 TM, the first four discs were very interesting, and I'm glad I have them, but I'm not sure I'll play them very often. Right now, I'm enjoying the session with Jan Hammer and Chick Corea on disc 5. Throughout this set, of course, Elvin is a MONSTER. Actually--and don't take this the wrong way--I'm a bit surprised that a Wynton fan would be such a big fan of this set. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted September 14, 2006 Report Posted September 14, 2006 Well, I've been listening to this all day - now on the last handful of trax. Surprisingly, I don't feel I've overdosed on Sonny. I used to have two of the LPs that make up this box - sold them in 1970. Over the last 36 years, I've either got much more into Stitt, or I was wanting my music in 1970 to be a lot more funkified; probably both. Sonny's style always makes me think of the economist John Kenneth Galbraith, whose opponents described his style as "dangerously easy to read". I think Sonny is dangerously easy to listen to. I thought I was just buying this box for the Don Patterson tracks but I've found myself enjoying everything - and occasionally being knocked out by some tracks - even ones I had before like "Mother Tucker". What a good day! And I've not yet started on the Cousin Joe box! That'll have to wait until tomorrow. MG Quote
tranemonk Posted September 14, 2006 Report Posted September 14, 2006 Very funny.... You'd be surpised by how "enlightened some of Wynton fans can be.... king ubu Posted September 14, 2006 Report Posted September 14, 2006 Immensely enjoying CD2 of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis - I absolutely love the live dates! Disc 1 is great as well, but disc 4 and 5 are not that good, in my opinion. They're good, don't get me wrong, but they lack the live and immediate quality of the live dates - the opening track of CD2 is terrific (as is, by the way, the opening track of CD1). Quote
Kalo Posted September 15, 2006 Report Posted September 15, 2006 The Complete Verve Gerry Mulligan Concert Band Sessions - Disc II I'm really glad I finally took the plunge on this set. Quote
tranemonk Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Sarah Vaughn Disc 3... on random play.. Ironically this is making me want to listen to the Anita O'Day set more....(probably tomorrow on the way to work.... ) I've just not been able to get into Sassy... When she does a song straight... it's wonderful... but she was so prone to oversinging it.... (and winging it...) I know some of this board LOVE this set.... It's just got too many misses for me... and not enough hits.... Quote
