I have not purchased this box yet.  I have been relistening to the Dial Mosaic Box, mastered with same person and mastering.  People have complained about the sound of this release. but I think it sounds fine.  I assume you are finding the sound of the Savoy to be similar?

The sound does vary from take to take, but I think that's a function of the source. It generally sounds quite fine to me--much like the Dial, which I also liked.

Select #1. They started a very good collection with that one, which sadly has come to a standstill.

An especially good set considering the Jackie McLean dates included.

Me too!  Just started revisiting this today for the first time in years.

The Sam Rivers set really IS good. I haven't listened to it enough myself.

Yes, it's a very good set. I love the McLean, Moncur, Hutcherson combination. And One Step Beyond and Destination Out are two gems.

Listening my way through the Lunceford box, which I picked up yesterday - very enjoyable music. Some of the arrangements are amazing.

Finally have gotten around to starting the Woody Shaw Muse box.  It has been on back order for a long time.  Just into disc one, but this is one nice sounding set.

Question for those who have the Gerald Wilson or Oliver Nelson Mosaic box sets.  Who wrote the notes for the booklets and did you find them worth reading?

I have some of the original albums, and if the rest of the set is as good as those you're in for a treat. I need to get this box, too, since all my vinyl is in storage.

The Wilson set was written by Doug Ramsey. I like the booklet - nice overview plus session notes. Also a LOT of great photos that you probably won't get anywhere else.

Listening to the Mulligan Concert Jazz Band set the other day whetted my appettite for this. I searched and found a new one from a seller for about 20 dollars more and got it. I found out (to my absolute pleasure I must say) that Hall and Raney play together on one album here, The Street Swingers. :tup
