ghost of miles Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 It's going to be a late-Saturday night program, airing at 11 p.m. (midnight from October-April), one hour long, following "Portraits in Blue." I have a tentative title and theme, as well as an idea of the show's sensibility... more to follow, but thanks once again to the many posters here whose knowledge of & love for jazz is so inspiring! Peter Johnson Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 Does your station stream its broadcasts over the internet? I'd love to listen in! Quote

Jim Alfredson Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 It better be something by Jimmy Smith... Quote
Brandon Burke Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 I used to have a show called This is Our Music wherin I profiled a particular artist, genre, instrument each week. It was a lot of fun and keeping it limited to just an hour meant it wasn't too taxing on the listener if they weren't completely into the subject matter. Also, I did not limit myself to jazz. These were my topics (by week)... **late-2000** Week 1: Ornette Coleman: This is Our Music Week 2: The Story of the Mekons Week 3: Solo piano works: Jazz and Concert, modern and postmodern Week 4: John Lurie: Lounge Lizards, Nat’l Orchestra, and Film Scores Week 5: Odd or Otherwise Interesting Covers Week 6: King Tubby and the Roots of Dub: The Modern-Primitive Sound Week 7: Lennie Tristano, Warne Marsh, and Lee Konitz Week 8: Elmo Hope and Herbie Nichols: Under-Appreciated Giants Week 9: American Tone Poems: Ives, Mingus, Wayne Shorter, Marion Brown Week 10: The Hammond B-3 in Jazz: Jimmy Smith, Freddie Roach, and Larry Young Week 11: Jazz Interpretations of Themes by Thelonious Monk Week 12: 33 1/3 Years of the Red Krayola: The Story So Far Week 13: Odd or Otherwise Interesting Christmas Songs Week 14: Bobby Hutcherson: His Contribution to the Early Avant-Garde **early-2001** Week 1: Smile: The Partnership of Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks Week 2: Marc Ribot: Sideman, Leader, Solo Week 3: An Avant-Funk Retrospective: Joe McPhee, Art Ensemble of Chicago, etc. Week 4: Bola Sete Week 5: Jackie McLean: Destination . . . Out! Week 6: Remembering John Fahey Week 7: The Psychedelic Sounds of the International Artists Label: 13th Floor Elevators, Bubble Puppy, Lost and Found, The Golden Dawn, etc. Week 8: His Name was Albert Ayler Week 9: The Soft Machine: Canterbury Tales Week 10: [Guest Host: Steven Yantis] Week 11: Grachan Moncur III: The High Modern Sound Week 12: Eric Dolphy: The Ultimate Sideman Week 13: Down to Earth: The Early Works of Sun Ra Quote

GregK Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 Good for you!! I very much enjoy my NPR jazz station (WEMU, Ypsilanti!!), despite it's liberal slant. The jazz programming is fantastic! Quote

Dave James Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 Wow, that is way cool. I assume you've done radio before. I'll never forget the first time I went "live". I'm told it sounded like I'd been sucking on the world's largest helium filled balloon for several days. It took awhile to get ahead of the open mike jitters. I even used to write out my break patter. Then I just decided one day to just talk and it worked out fine. Do you do your own engineering or is there someone to do that for you. Hopefully at the NPR level, that won't be your responsibility. For what it's worth, remember what I used to call the sine wave. Has to do with varying the tempo of your musical "attack". I also made it a point never to play a tune that featured the same instrument twice in a row, but that's my own personal idiosyncracy. I also never did more that two vocals in an hour. Anyhow, good luck. You are going to have some serious fun. Up over and out. Quote
