ejp626 Posted October 23, 2013 Report Posted October 23, 2013 Last Sat. I saw Kronos Quartet (for the second time). They are doing even more touring than usual, since this is their 40th Anniversary year. While I enjoyed the first time around (2009) a bit more, it was an interesting show and it was the world premiere of Philip Glass's 6th String Quartet. I am sorely tempted to go down to LA on March 14 when they are playing Black Angels. (They are also doing this in Berkeley on Dec. 7.) I honestly don't know how often they play Black Angels in concert, but I wouldn't think they do it that often (I might be completely off about that.) I have delved a bit more into their recent back catalog and was quite intrigued that they commissioned a piece for 2 cellos and that Joan Jeanrenaud performed on the recording (and a handful of concerts). I went ahead and ordered the CD on which this performs (and am waiting for the download to complete...). Quote

A Lark Ascending Posted October 25, 2013 Report Posted October 25, 2013 (edited) Tonight: Louis Moholo-Moholo Quartet - Louis Moholo-Moholo – drums; Alex Hawkins – piano; Jason Yarde – saxophones; John Edwards – bass As expected, a tremendous concert. Two high energy, mainly continuous, sets with a couple of brief pieces to tail each set. Familiar tunes kept rising out of the maelstrom - from the Moholo-Moholo past and standards (even 'What a Wonderful World' at one point). In a way, four generations of musicians there - Moholo-Moholo going back to the 60s, John Edwards from the 80s, Jason Yarde who I first became aware of in the 90s and then Alex from the early 21stC. The revelation for me this time was John Edwards who I have seen before but I suddenly see why everyone raves about him. Had a brief chat with Alex - as humble and gracious as ever. Hope this line-up can do more - and that a recording emerges in the future. Next Week: The Full English - Fay Hield, Seth Lakeman, Martin Simpson, Nancy Kerr, Sam Sweeney, Rob Harbron, Ben Nicholls And in a few weeks: Camerata Zurich, Barry Guy - Barry Guy "Time Passing" UK Premiere The latter promises to take me to "an existential state of contemplation and questioning". I don't think so! Edited October 26, 2013 by A Lark Ascending Quote

jeffcrom Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 Atlanta guitarist Jacob Deaton produces the "Sounds From the Underground" series at the Elliott Street Pub every Monday night. Tonight Kevin Scott, a bassist with whom I've played many times, played guitar in an improvised duo with a drummer. It was great - Derek Bailey meets Johnny Guitar Watson! I didn't even know that Kevin played guitar. Quote

Head Man Posted November 5, 2013 Report Posted November 5, 2013 Went to see Dave Holland with Prism last Sunday at Ronnie Scott's.....very disappointing. Although the musicians (Dave Holland, Craig Taborn, Kevin Eubanks and Eric Harland) seemed to be enjoying themselves, it was the music itself that let it down. Every tune seemed to be a variation of the one before so there was very little variety. I really don't think the group works with a guitar as the lead instrument. Anyway, it was good to see Dave Holland again. I calculated that the last time I had seen him playing live was in a tiny club near Liverpool St. Station in 1968 or 69.... amazing! Quote
Justin V Posted November 9, 2013 Report Posted November 9, 2013 (edited) I just got home from seeing the Paul Winter Sextet, with Howard Johnson, Marvin Stamm, Warren Bernhardt, Cecil McBee and Jamey Haddad, in Pittsburgh. They'll be streaming Saturday's set at 8 here: http://mcgjazz.org/_wp/. Completely unfamiliar with Winter, I wasn't planning on going until I found out who was in the band (I particularly couldn't resist McBee and Johnson). There was excellent playing from everyone. The surprising thing was how short they kept each number; using the new '62-3 Sextet anthology, Count Me In, as a reference, the band played approximately 14 songs over the course of 80 minutes. Despite the brevity of the songs, the horns and Bernhardt all had plenty of solo time. The only disappointment that the redoubtable McBee didn't have a single solo, not counting a humorous ending he played after one number. For anyone interested, the two-disc anthology has 14 previously unreleased tracks and features sidemen like McBee, Chuck Israels, Bernhardt, Jay Cameron, Freddie Waits, Gene Bertoncini, Harold Jones and Ben Riley, to name a few. The Pittsburgh concerts are commemorating the first jazz concert held at the White House, which is included on the anthology. Based on the concert earlier tonight, I'm pretty excited to listen to it and to stream the second night's set. This is engaging sextet music that deserves to be heard.
