I came away impressed with both Shaw and Waits. Kris Davis was solid, but didn't really stand out, performance wise, IMO. And Dave was fantastic. edit - for those that haven't been to the MIM, it's an amazing museum, easily Smithsonian caliber. They have the oldest guitar in existence (dating from 1590), and a Chinese drum that's more than 6,000 years old. Plus Eric Dolphy's sax, Thelonious Monk's piano, Buddy Rich's drum set, Gerry Mulligan's baritone sax, and Lionel Hampton's vibraharp. Too many other things to mention. All 4 were excellent here in Santa Fe. BTW, have been to MIM & it's fantastic. Quote
Pim Posted September 18 Report Posted September 18 When I saw him in Leuven in 2018 I thought that might be the only and last opportunity to see him perform live. But upcoming Saturday I will see him perform again in Utrecht: Abdullah Ibrahim, 89 years old. I assume he will play for a small hour, solo piano, his well known repertoire like he did in 2017. That was one of the most intimate concerts I’ve ever witnessed. Looking very much forward to it! Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted September 18 Report Posted September 18 It's been a while, but I'm getting back to a show this Saturday night. James Carter is playing at Scullers in Boston. I used to catch Carter on every swing through Boston but it's been a long time since I saw him last. He usually puts on a great performance. I know his showmanship turns some of you off but I actually like the stuff he does quite a bit. Quote

He came kind of near me (Richmond Hill, ONT) and I seriously considered it, but, not having a car, it is a huge drag to get there from where I am, and I was definitely worried about being stranded after the transit system stopped. I probably should have just figured it out (or maybe even Ubered it). I would have done so the following year(s), but I think the closest he has come lately is Albany. ☹️ Anyway, I just saw Pat LaBarbera with Neil Swainson and Terry Clarke at the Rex. It was a sold out show. Which is terrific! This is their annual John Coltrane birthday celebration. This time around they did Giant Steps, Blue Trane and part of A Love Supreme, in addition to other material that Trane played. Very good show. I also managed to get Neil's latest CD from him, and he signed it for me. 👍 Quote

Pim Posted September 22 Report Posted September 22 Abdullah Ibrahim. 89 years old and still going strong. He played a beautiful set of well known repertoire and new compositions. It was again a very intimate experience. He finished his set with some singing and chanting. The whole crowd stood up from their seats, all completely silent you couldn’t hear anyone breathe. Goosebumps. Quote

Kevin Bresnahan Posted September 24 Report Posted September 24 I'm planning to see Wingspan at Scullers Saturday night. This show, celebrating the music of Mulgrew Miller has Steve Nelson on vibes, Duane Eubanks on trumpet, Steve Wilson on saxophone, Benito Gonzalez in the piano chair, Nat Reeves on bass, & Carl Allen on drums. At this point, I'm wondering if the show is going to happen as there are not many tickets sold. This is becoming a problem here in the Boston area. Quote

I like his playing but he does play a lot Quote

SO many other saxophonists on the scene who are better: Ingrid, Camilla Nebbia, Maria Valencia, Mette, Malaby, Attias, Berne, Catherine Sikora, Madison Greenstone, Rempis, Lao Dan, etc. all much more themselves yes - too many notes. He gives us “everything” every set. Plus he doesn’t have a unique approach. Very derivative. Edited September 25 by Steve Reynolds Quote

She depped for an unwell McPhee with Decoy a couple of weeks ago at Oto. She definitely has it all there, held her own with a trio that has played together for 20 years or so. Great sound, great facility and can she improvise too. A revelation. Also, absolutely with you on Lao Dan. Only heard recordings though, has he played in NYC? Edited September 25 by mjazzg Quote

BFrank Posted September 26 Report Posted September 26 Lots of SFJAZZ this week Tomorrow: Marquis Hill w/drummer Makaya McCraven, vibraphonist Joel Ross, bassist Junius Paul, and keyboardist Mike King Friday: Don Was & His Pan-Detroit Ensemble w/Dave McMurray tenor saxophone, John Douglas trumpet, Vincent Chandler trombone, Wayne Gerard guitar, Luis Resto keyboards, Jeff Canady drums, Mahindi percussion, Steffanie Christi'an vocals Sunday: Bill Charlap Trio w/ Dee Dee Bridgewater and Nicholas Payton Quote
medjuck Posted September 26 Report Posted September 26 Don Was and the Pan-Detroit Ensemble. They played music by Henry Threadgill, Yusef Lateef, Hank Williams and Curtis Mayfield (amongst others). My only complaint is that it was in a beautiful small theater with no dance floor. (Some people danced anyway.) Quote
Pim Posted September 26 Report Posted September 26 Vijay Iyer Trio at the Bimhuis. Not with Linda May Han Oh and Tyshawn Sorey but with two young talented guys I didn’t new. They played for 2 full hours and it was great. Vijay signed my copy of Uneasy afterwards. Friendly guy. Quote
