The Oz Noy Trio with Brian Charette is coming to Chattanooga in October. Of course, my wife and I are producing the upcoming Benny Green benefit concert on September 17th for my station. I haven't seen Benny since the IAJE in Toronto in January 2002, where he played with Russell Malone, plus Ed Thigpen sitting in for part of the set.

Mike LeDonne and Eric Alexander tonight at the Jazz Bistro

Next week there are a few shows of interest, mostly at the Rex including Pat LeBarbara and Kirk MacDonald doing their Coltrane Tribute.  Probably need to decide when I am going and make a reservation, as these shows often sell out.

I'm going to see Rush* in Boston tomorrow night.

* It's really not Rush without Neil but I at least the lead singer is still singing.

I think you'll be impressed.  The drummer, Anika Nilles, is exceptional (and yes, she's not Neil Peart).  She fits with Geddy and Alex well, and by all accounts they are having the time of their lives.  And having a guy playing keyboards frees Geddy up to bounce around the stage more and just have more fun playing bass.  

My daughter saw Rush in Philly recently, and I'm going when they hit Phoenix.  Their previous tour in 2015, the final with Neil, was solid.  I saw it in Austin and thought it was very good.  But by most accounts this has been even better, overall. Geddy's voice is better too.

I recently saw the second of their four shows in Toronto, and it was fantastic. 

Of course, it's not the same without Neil.  But Anika is an excellent drummer.

So this was really LeDonne's gig, not Alexander's, but it was sort of the polar opposite of some people's recent experience.  There was almost no stage patter between the songs, and indeed almost none of the titles were called. 😟 And definitely no cracking jokes.  Towards the end of the second set, LeDonne did talk a bit about Lou Donaldson and Mary Lou Williams, as he had a song dedicated to each...

So Rush was a good show. It would've been better if I knew all of the songs they played. I am not a huge Rush fan and there were some albums they made that I didn't listen to because I didn't really like them that much. "2112" was one of them and they played the title tune in its entirety.

Anika was impressive. There were only a couple of tunes where it seemed like she was missing the offbeat accents here and there.

I also screwed up by only wearing ear protection in my damaged right ear. Now my left ear is ringing like crazy today. I have my fingers crossed that it will lessen with time.

I saw Peter Bernstein at Ronnie's last night, in a quartet that included Sullivan Fortner and Doug Weds. 

Really a great gig. Nice to see jazz played so well, and with such purpose and rhythm.
