... also that Tom Waits guests on two songs.

Before I knew that, I always thought it was strange that Waits' name popped up when I was searching for Edwards albums. Then I had my D'OH! moment.

I repeatedly forget that Sunset Eyes and Teddy's Ready were recorded on consecutive days, August 16th (Pacific Jazz) and August 17th (Contemporary), 1960. Probably my two favorite Edwards albums.

The appreciations of others may differ but disc 4 (1959 quartet) and, in particular, discs 5 and 6 (1966 orchestra and tentet) of the Joe Castro box set released on Sunnyside have quickly become some of my favorite Teddy Edwards.

I didn't like Teddy Edwards much because he seemed somewhat frail, but I found the two Prestige records are excellent. Thanks for letting me know!  These are eye openers.  Also, I didn't like his composition Sunset Eyes much either, but I think The version on The Inimitable is great thanks to Duke Jordan.

What the hell would you possibly mean by "frail"? Teddy was one of the toughest tenor sounds right from the start.

Interesting thread as I'm a newcomer to Teddy's work having picked up a copy of Heart & Soul on Contemporary a couple of weeks ago. I've been playing it a lot so will be keeping an eye out for some of his other dates as leader.

My two favorites:

I envy a listener who gets to hear them for the first time!

Edwards was so classy...👇

I was very happy that Teddy happened to be playing at an LA club during one of my rare business trips there in the late 90s. I got to see him play that one time and he played great.

I enjoy all of Teddy's recordings. I have an LP copy of the Pacific Jazz session that birthed this thread - good session.

If I were forced to choose one disc as a favorite, it would probably be Teddy in a trio with Christian McBride & Billy Higgins, issued in France in 1995 on the Verve/Gitanes Jazz label titled "Tango In Harlem". It surprises me to see the selling price of this somewhat rare CD, as it costs me quite a lot when I finally found a copy on line. The late bird gets the worm? :)

Really nice. I hadn't heard it!

Teddy Edwards appeared at a Jazz Party I attended toward the end of his life. He was not in the best of shape, but nonetheless still sounded very good to me. Was glad I had the chance to see him in person.

Hard to select one favorite album by Teddy, but one of my favorites is "Together Again" with Howard McGhee and Phineas Newborn,Jr.
