Well thanks for all the happy thoughts and wishes, everyone.

Not the greatest birthday ever, but since I always make sure to take care of myself, I did enjoy:

Out of This World, The Three Sounds (JRVG)

Soular Energy, The Ray Brown Trio (Pure Audiophile LP remaster)

Killer Joe, One For All (Venus)

And as is usually the case from my friends and family, there are multiple gifts yet to come. See, I'll get to turn 40 several times in the next few days! :g

Happy Birthday, Dan! BTW, now that you're 40, you can OFFICIALLY take on the role of the crotchety, conservative, middle-aged guy you've been rehearsing so well for years. :P

You know, I've been kinda bummed about this "landmark" birthday, but thanks Ron, this makes it all worthwhile.

I have to say, this post made me think of this:

Oh, man Dan. Don't get bummed about 40!

Forty is that great time when you have that perfect combination

of young at heart without a great abundance of naiveté.

(tho, you still need some... ;))

Most of the people that I've grown up respecting did their best work

after they had 40 years to formulate them.

Yeah, we had some great musicians who did great work before dying at an early age,

but I can't help but think what Trane, for instance,

might've accomplished if he continued his growth long after 40.

Or Brownie, etc...

Forty, in many ways, is a great time to start from zero

using the ideas that you've formed up to that time.

I think that when you hit 50, that's the time to reassess

what you've done the previous 10 and see how you feel about how your life's going.

Forty was a great "cleansing" time for me.

I was actually looking forward to it and have made

the most of my forties creatively ever since.

Forty's the best! (50 is second best - ;))

You can reciprocate next year when I turn 50.:unsure::ph34r:
