GA Russell Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 The 70s are the new 50s. Thus sayeth Free For All, from the Blue Note Conns thread. I've been thinking the same thing, particularly because of the comments in the Plays for Lovers thread about recycling already issued material. Later this year, Concord/Fantasy will issue a series of CDs called Milestone Profiles, similar to their series of Prestige Profiles of last year. The Prestige Profiles were reissues of the year old Best of CDs of 50s Prestige artists, coupled with bonus discs of assorted Prestige recordings. The marketing pitch behind the Milestone series will be the celebration of the 40th anniversary of Orrin Keepnews' founding of the company. I don't know who is slated for the Milestone Profiles discs, nor do I know if these too will come with bonus discs. I imagine that the series will include McCoy Tyner, Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, and Ron Carter. Who else made enough Milestone albums to warrant a Best of disc? I spent much of the 70s living in Pittsburgh, and jazz was hard to find in the record stores. I have little recollection of what was being put out then. So what from the 70s do you think Concord/Fantasy should reissue on CD for the first time? I'll email the company with your requests. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 i wasn't alive for most of the 70s so i wasn't there but here are some off the top of my head- azar lawrence (at least two of his three-could make a nice twofer of his first two (best two)?) todd cochran AKA bayete-his two presitge albums could make a two-fer (bobby hutcherson is on one of them) jerry hahn-moses (maybe hippies would buy it since merle saunders is on it-and sounds good) gary bartz-home (was that late 60s?) joe henderson-black narcissus (deserves to be released outside of the now pretty old boxset) jack dejohnette-the ones not yet on CD including cosmic chicken and the quartet with bennie maupin and gary peacock one mccoy tyner-horizon (addition of violin adds something different to yet another mccoy tyner studio session) well these are off the top of my head. i am sure i could come up with more. Rooster_Ties Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 (edited) Dear lord, Joe Henderson's POWER TO THE PEOPLE desparately needs to be issued for the very first time (domestically) as a release of its own. It's a crime it's never been issued by itself, all these years. IMHO, it's Joe's single best non-BN leader date. (Edit: I understand Power To The People was issued as a single disc in Italy (I think), in a mini-LP style format. I think this is the only release it's ever seen on CD, in all these years.) Guest akanalog Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 i guess i didn't think of that one because it has been readily available as a universal disc around here for so long though you are right-it is a good one and should be around domestically. it is also late 60s.... i hate the universal CD packaging-they always seem to scratch the CDs. clifford_thornton Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 The Karl Berger Quartet, though AK may beg to differ... Quote
Guest akanalog Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 anything with ed blackwell is worth a listen....but no i won't be checking it out for mr. berger. Quote
mikeweil Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 Basically, I think Keepnews was a little over-ambitious and neglected to document the musicians' working groups (like the geat Tyner band with Eric Gravatt). OTOH an artist like Joe Henderson was thrilling in ever changing contexts and reacted with highly inspired blowing. Although the labels were treated seprately I find it hard to draw a line between Prestige, Fantasy, and Milestone releases in the 1970's - and some artists switched. Jack de Johnette's LPs on Milestone and Prestige I like a lot, they take a lot of chances and display a creative approach to tradition. Luis Gasca's 2 Fantasy Lps are rare and get high prices on eBay. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 good point on the gascas. i like the one with the version of a love supreme on it and terry bozzio??? on it but the other one didn't do it for me when i heard it even though i really dug the cover art. also-good one chuck! Quote
JSngry Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 Maybe they could lease the Helen Merill sides back. That's some pretty interesting (and on her take of "Lonely Woman", shattering) stuff. I know that they were out on Verve for a while, but aren't they OOP now? Quote
GA Russell Posted February 3, 2006 Author Report Posted February 3, 2006 An apology. I don't get it. What's your problem with Milestone? Quote
Guest akanalog Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 since concorde took over have they release a freaking thing that wasn't brand new or already out on the market one to five times? i think they do owe an apology as it seems like they are not going to hold true to their word to keep the reissue spirit going. though cannonball-addicte, who used to post here more often, did claim he had word that concorde was getting together a team or whatever to start working on bringing some stuff out. but i mean bringing out good older stuff which has not seen the light of the digital age yet, not reissues of reissues. GA Russell Posted February 4, 2006 Author Report Posted February 4, 2006 It's going to be hard to encourage Concord/Fantasy to reissue Milestones from the 70s if akanalog is the only one who has suggestions. Quote
JSngry Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 Ok, how about having them comb the vaults and see if there's more and/or better performances from the Milestone Jazzstars tour? The album they released had a few moments, but I was left thinking that there could/should be better. Quote
DMP Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 Aren't there a couple of McCoy Tyner's "Milestones" albums that haven't been reissued? Quote
Guest akanalog Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 like i mentioned earlier-horizon would be nice. that is an unissued tyner album. i mean it would be nice but i would rather someone who has gotten less love than tyner get some love at this point. i would just like to see something from concorde. like a good faith offering. just show me they care and will be putting some good stuff out! oh- another suggestion would be... hapton hawes-blues for walls and um what is the name of the other one...it has a cosmic name. universe? cosmos? would those two fit on disc? better than that last two hawes on one disc (the live one and the crappy northern windows one...) Quote
Guest akanalog Posted February 6, 2006 Report Posted February 6, 2006 another suggestion as there are many organ fans here-johnny lytle's "the soulful rebel". not a bad date, IMO though a weird band with a few knowns (ron carter and ray baretto) and some unknowns (jozelle carter? and whoever is on organ). i also like gary bartz's "slingerella" but there is better stuff out there to be issued first. jazzbo Posted February 6, 2006 Report Posted February 6, 2006 Jim, yes those Merrills are out of print again. . . good call. . . . Great material. Quote
GA Russell Posted February 7, 2006 Author Report Posted February 7, 2006 OK, at this point there are 438 views, so I have sent the link to this thread to Concord/Fantasy, and they will be free to consider the suggestions given. Thanks for your input! Quote
brownie Posted February 7, 2006 Report Posted February 7, 2006 Jim, yes those Merrills are out of print again. . . good call. . . . Great material. The two Helen Merrill albums on Milestone ('The Feeling Is Mutual' and 'A Shade of Difference') were reissued a few years ago by Gitanes/EmArcy here. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 7, 2006 Report Posted February 7, 2006 Right, but they don't seem to be available now, at least not through regular distributors. Quote
brownie Posted February 7, 2006 Report Posted February 7, 2006 Right, but they don't seem to be available now, at least not through regular distributors. Got a spare copy of 'A Shade of Difference' on Gitanes. PM me if you want it! Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted February 7, 2006 Report Posted February 7, 2006 There are two JohnnyLytle's that should be issued - they could come out on one CD. "The soulful rebel" is very good. "People and love" is Lytle's best LP ever. Just his 12 minute version of The Stylistics' piece of shit "People make the workd go round" is enough to warrant release; it's an object lesson in how a jazzman can turn shit into gold. And it grooves like crazy. Marvin Cabell is on this LP, as well as Butch Cornell. There are also two great Jimmy Ponder LPs - "Down here on the ground" and "So many stars". Both of them are really good. I wouldn't mind seeing the Johnny "Hammond" Smiths coming out, either. MG Quote
jazzbo Posted February 7, 2006 Report Posted February 7, 2006 I've got them all myself Guy, but would like to see them available again in US editions. Helen deserves the treatment! Quote
