Hearing an Anthony Braxton cover of "JuJu" today got me thinking about this topic. Wayne's songs tend to lend themselves to interesting interpretations. Thanks in advance for your comments.

Liebman recorded a great version of Footprints on the OOP Pendulum (w/Randy Brecker, Richie Beirach, Frank Tusa and Al Foster). Al Foster's solo is one of my favorite drum solos.

This whole side smokes, I hope they reissue it someday soon.

Jimmy Rowles was a big Wayne Shorter fan, & recorded a number of his tunes over the years.

Devil's Island (Some Other Spring, BAJC, 1972)

Chess Players (Paws That Refresh, CHOICE, 1974)

Miyako, Tom Thumb, Tell It Like It Is, Running Brook (Pretty Eyes, PROGRESSIVE, 1976)

Lester Left Town, Chess Players (The Peacocks, COLUMBIA, 1977)

Mama G (Red 'n Me, ALL LIFE, 1979)

This is what I could find in my collection - I'm sure there are more.

One of my favorite tributes to Wayne is Shorter By Two (SUNNYSIDE, 1983) by Kirk Lightsey & Harold Danko, a whole album (11 tracks on the CD) of piano duet interpretations of Shorter tunes. Worth looking for!

Rowles was the first that I thought of. I remember I started a thread about the Rowles-Shorter affinity on the deceased BNBB. Shorter, BTW, returned the favor by recording Rowles' 502 Blues on the Adam's Apple album, and of course The Peacocks on Native Dancer.

That's such a great blowing vehicle that not even Shorter himself revisited - the Rowles/Mitchell duo plays the shit out of that tune! That album was reissued on a Dreyfus CD, which should be easier to find.

This reminds me of the strange fact that Shorter's tunes - whom I consider to be one of the best jazz composers of his generation - are not played as often as they should be, except for Footprints, which is played ad nauseam.

I agree that Footprints has been flogged to death but there's an interesting up tempo vocal version on Rene Rosnes Art & Soul-

D Reeves Voc R Rosnes piano Scott Colley bass Billy Drummond dr.

And still too few get the turnaround changes right.

I remember seeing Stan Getz practically bring an audience to tears with a rendition of "Infant Eyes" some years ago. It shows up on a couple of live recordings from the 1970's, but they don't match the way he played it that night.

That's a great version and the first that came to my mind.
