David Ayers Posted October 23, 2006 Report Share Posted October 23, 2006 First, I'm a convert to the Elvin set, having thought based on what I had heard that I didn't need it. In a different way than the Andrew Hill, but in some ways on a par, it is a Mosaic modern jazz classic. Which brings me to my question - what could replace Elvin in the Mosaic lists? The demise of the Andrew Hill set left a huge gap. The absence of Elvin leaves the later sixties and after wide open. I know there are several post-bop Selects, but I am trying to work out what big chunk of post-hard bop material is up there begging for Mosaic treatment. I know we all mention the Braxton Arista from time to time (and I am definitely with that even though I have it all). Any other candidates? (Give me another cup of coffee, and I'll try to get the synapses firing.) Hmmm, "post hard-bop" ... I'd personally like to see a Pharoah Sanders Impulse! Mosaic, but I think that's fairly doubtful, especially as most of the material has already seen compact disc reissue. I'm still bugging Cuscuna from time to time about a Tchicai/Rudd set, but that would have to be a Select. Nothing on Muse could likely be Mosaic-ed ... Apparently, as Charles Tolliver now has a relationship with Blue Note again, there's a possibility of something from the Strata East vaults. Boris Rose is the jazz preservation hero who recorded tons of material (radio broadcasts mainly) from the late '40s into the '80s. He is the one who recorded Bird (and many others) at the Royal Roost, Lester Young, Count Basie and many others at Birdland. Also Charles Mingus, Cecil Taylor, etc... Some of his tapes were released on bootleg albums (a few made it on very legal releases). There is a lot of the material which still remains dormant. Mosaic would have a hard time in getting authorisations from participants if they were ever to try releasing sets from these tapes. This material has probably been issued on CD too many times before to merit enough sales of a new set, but I know I would buy this or any other kind of Woody Shaw Mosaic project in a heart beat.
