have you heard about Herbie Hancock's Hear O Israel 1969 sabbath album? it's being reissued in a short run in the UK.

don't know if that's cause for rejoice or just a pain in the ass. of course that nutter Johnny Trunk's behind it and that should be enough guarantee, but ... and it seems to be already causing waves among collectors.

i haven't heard it and doubt i will. but for Hancock completists it could be a find. the lineup's also not bad.

Hear o Israel

and while you're there you can also find out about a lost Michael Garrick LP. that one might be more interesting, i reckon. at least the story is interesting.

Anything Johnny puts out on vinyl is as good as sold to me. :tup

Just noticed this on the Trunk site - looks very interesting indeed.

The Garrick 'Moonscape' LP is only out for a week or so and already sold out on Trunk's site. That one is a beauty so snap it up if you can find it.

Reading the personnel, that Hancock could be a sequel to Speak Like A Child - without the religious texts and vocals, that is.

Herbie Hancock - piano

Jerome Richardson - flute, tenor and alto sax

Grady Tate – drums

Thad Jones – trumpet and flugelhorn

Ron Carter – bass

Jonathan Klein – French horn and baritone (horn?)

Put out some feelers for some background info, and here's what I got back:

Recorded in 1968. Jonathan Klein was commissioned by the National Federation Of Temple Youth

to compose a suite. His mom was dating Herbie at the time and asked him to create a band to play the

music.

It's ok with some nice Herbie solos....

I knew some people in college that had been NFTY members. IIRC it's affiliated with the Reform Movement.

i'm a big trunk fan and have a good number of them, but this one has me baffled. can you expound on this date, side?

'Moonscape' was recorded by Garrick back in 1964 prior to his Argo albums and done as a private issue - 99 copies only on 10" LP. Johnny Trunk got hold of one of these rarities and with master tapes gone and with Garrick's OK - has reissued the session on CD and limited 12" vinyl (500 copies). It's a nice date, not unlike his Argo trio on 'Cold Mountain' I guess but with a 'fresher' feel typical of the early 60s. In that respect it reminds me of the Rendell/Carr 'Shades of Blue'. The original LP was recorded and issued by the obscure Airborne label - sound is not the greatest I guess but I find it quite adequate.

The idea of marketing this as a "lost Herbie Hancock" recording is VERY deceptive. Obviously Hancock is the biggest name on the record, but he is simply one of the hired session players on a session more appropriately described as a Union for Reform Judaism secular recording starring Rabbi David Davis with arrangements by Jonathan Klein and band members including Hancock, Carter, etc..

But - that wouldn't sell more than 8 copies. Hardly a sequel to Speak Like A Child...I guess if you stretch it far enough, maybe they could call it "Speak Like A Mensch" ...

I came across this record several years ago. Marketing it as a Herbie Hancock album is a gross deception. All of the music was composed by the teenage Jonathan Klein, with Herbie and the others performing Klein's music, which I would describe as jazz inflected Jewish religious music. I didn't think it was worth keeping, and I doubt many others will think so either.

Something doesn't add up - I'm pretty sure that by 1968, Herbie was already married. Didn't Ian Carr's book say that he left Miles' band in '68 and went on his honeymoon (Mexico or Brazil?) and got food poisoning?

Bertrand.

Yes, and the 'Speak Like A Child' cover is of him and his new wife, I believe.

Hmm. Thanks for that. It will be a case of checking sound samples before picking up this one I think.

Just given 'Moonscape' the nth spin since picking it up and I can say you won't be disappointed. Not often I get a spare vinyl on new releases but I have for this one.

I've heard exerpts from the 'Flexi-Sex' and it is hilarious. Basically recitations of dirty mac brigade letters sent in to porn mags back in the 70s. Trunk also did a limited T-shirt with exerpts from some of those letters but it sold out fast. Wear that one at your peril ! :g

There's a £4.99 10-year anniversary sampler just come out with tracks from the 'Dirty Fan Mail', 'Moonscape' and the Herbie - must get that one.

Looks like it's OOP (the 'Flexi' that is).

"Also included are Tantalising Tina, Rosey and Nobby, Sonias Sex Diary, Folky Fenella from Dorset ( :excited: ) whose real name is Eydie.."

Me wants ! :g
