ghost of miles Posted March 14, 2009 Report Posted March 14, 2009 Something I've thought about, given how long many members on this board have known one another: Death in online communities Quote
Jazzmoose Posted March 14, 2009 Report Posted March 14, 2009 Yeah, I've thought about this as well. I'd hate to drop dead and...well, I guess I'd hate to drop dead, but you know what I mean... Quote

Aggie87 Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 We did lose board member Mnytalk (think that was his name) a while back. He was quite a character, if everything he said was to be believed. Quote
J.A.W. Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 (edited) Member "grey" (Ken Price), who sold quite a few Japanese K2s here, died a few years ago - I think it was late 2004. Ken Price tribute thread Edited March 15, 2009 by J.A.W. Quote
John L Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 Mnytime. aka Karim. It was never clear at all if he really died. He gave us one sensationalist story after another, and then this one. Another site also caught him using another account and username at a time when he was supposedly unable to participate on the board for some sensationalist reason. On the other hand, who knows. People do die in real life. Quote

He was quite a character, if everything he said was to be believed. I'm pretty sure Mnytime (stood for "Money Time") is still here, just using a different user name. Quote

Ken Price tribute thread Yeah, grey was the person I thought of when I read the first post. Fortunately (if that's the word), we were told. Mnytime? Uh...yeah. Then again, there may very well be people who we think have drifted off that drifted a lot farther than we think. Quote

Thankfully, no. There's no doubt Brian is still alive and well and pissing off the masses using a variety of different user names... but Mnytime isn't him. Quote
BERIGAN Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 One of the sadder stories I recall was a website several years ago(Around 1999?) that had many old Sherlock Holmes radio shows you could stream. My Mom used to check it out pretty often for updates, but there hadn't been any in awhile, then finally the Mother of the person who ran it posted that he had died. He was just some young guy in his 20's who was a huge fan of old radio. Quote

robviti Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 (edited) was mnytime the guy who posted that he lost 2 relatives at the wtc on 9/11, a claim that was later proved to be a lie? regarding the original theme of this thread, i've sometimes wondered if some clients who drop out of therapy without warning may have passed away. i know this is true of at least two of my clients in the past. it's not like the first idea that pops into a grieving family's minds is "what was his therapist's name? we should give him a call." i was grateful to have one widow call me with the sad news of her husband's death from a heart attack, because then i was able to attend his wake and pay my respects. John L Posted March 17, 2009 Report Posted March 17, 2009 was mnytime the guy who posted that he lost 2 relatives at the wtc on 9/11, a claim that was later proved to be a lie? Yes, that was one of the claims: two of his relatives were supposedly in the Tower. Right after 9/11, he also came on the Jazz Corner board as if ignorant of what happened, and posted the flight name of one of the planes that crashed into the Tower, claiming that his parents were on that flight. He asked people to help him understand what is going on. After eating up the huge emotional reaction, he let us know the happy news: unknown to him, his parents decided to change flights at the last minute. Quote
catesta Posted March 17, 2009 Report Posted March 17, 2009 What about those stories about his "Penthouse Pet of the Month" wrecking his Bentley while being chased by Donald Trump?. I mean really, give me a break. Nevermind, I think that was my story. Quote
Aggie87 Posted March 17, 2009 Report Posted March 17, 2009 (edited) Didn't he have a major collection of snakes or reptiles or something too? edit - Oh yeah, and he used to hang with Jimmy Page, too. Edited March 17, 2009 by Aggie87 Quote
Hot Ptah Posted March 17, 2009 Report Posted March 17, 2009 (edited) In 2006, Marc Meyers, "Clifton", passed away. He was one of the most knowledgable people to participate in jazz forums and a truly good person. It appears that he did not post very much here. I first encoutered him on the ill fated Jazz Times forum, several years ago. Marc was a moderator and one of the best influences at All About Jazz. When he passed away, that board was never the same again. Many members of that board responded immediately with very heartfelt thoughts about him. This is an example of how many people can feel a genuine loss when a member of their online community passes away. Edited March 17, 2009 by Hot Ptah Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted March 17, 2009 Report Posted March 17, 2009 SEK was a good friend. My first online loss was back in the days of usenet groups. I frequented rec.music.bluenote and had many exchanges with Dr Don Koldon. He was a recording engineer (check out his credits) and was living in Chicago. He left the board and kept up email conversations with me. He sent me some materials and then everything stopped. I eventually received and email from the family to let me know he had taken his life. Pay close attention to your comments. Quote
.:.impossible Posted March 18, 2009 Report Posted March 18, 2009 That is terrible Chuck. Sorry to hear. We recently experienced the suicide of someone as close to family as you can get. It has been a difficult few weeks. Quote
catesta Posted March 18, 2009 Report Posted March 18, 2009 It must be something in the air. A couple of weeks ago, one of my closest friends came home to find his wife had taken her life. The Medical Examiner placed the time of her death as early morning which meant just after she dropped off their 2 year old son at the sitter. Quote
AllenLowe Posted March 18, 2009 Report Posted March 18, 2009 (edited) this is unhappy stuff but, as you realize as you get older, you are more and more likely to experience such things. These events almost seem out of place in such a safe and positive environment. Somehow it reminds me of that line from that Muppets movie where a pirate dies and one of the Muppets exclaims "he can't be dead! This is a kids movie!" I mean, this is Organissimo!
