Late Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 Fans? What albums that have Davis on them do you like? And which ones, in your opinion, are under-appreciated? Quote
fasstrack Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 Charles is still around NY. I played with him and Rodney Kendrick not too long ago. He's known for bari, and most of the well-known recordings are bari, but he prefers and considers himself a tenor player, that's what I always knew him to play---and he's excellent, great ideas. Good writer, too. I think the recording he did w/Steve Lacy of Monk's music is nice and I especially like Frank Strozier's 'Long Night'. Everybody played their ass off on that: Frank, Chris Anderson, Pat Patrick, Charles. (Charles played tenor, Pat bari---unless I'm confused, entirely possible---if not probable). But Charles is still doin' it---and I'm sure is still recording. Probably you have to hunt a bit, but 'seek and ye....' Quote
JSngry Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 Don't forget, he's also played soprano too. Certainly a distinctive voice on all axes. Catch him with Hank on Breakthrough, as well as with KD one Time album and one Jaro album. Davis also had a release on the short-lived West 54 label, but that one didn't do as much for me as I had hoped. He also had a side on Nilva which I have yet to pick up on. That Blue Gardenia side is pretty nifty, though, and I see that there's recent ones on Red & Smalls that I've not yet gotten to. Sure looks good, both of them do. Quote
Niko Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 i really like that roland alexander / ronnie matthews fantasy twofer and this has a lot to do with davis' contribution on one the matthews album.... on that strozier album it's george coleman on tenor... Quote

George, yeah. Why did I think Charles? Thanks. Oh, well.....great recording, though. I played with Roland Alexander too, a few times. He used to play at a loft owned by a guy named Gerry Eastman----(who no one knows about, but created his own scene in Williamsburg, Brooklyn). He passed away recently. Too bad. Good player. Pretty nice writer, too. We played his compositions. Quote
brownie Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 I like some Charles Davis albums better than others. That one is among the very best: Charles Davis on tenor with his quartet in 2006 in New York for Fresh Sound (bless Jordi Pujol!). Had never paid much attention to the music of the late Bent Jaedig previously. He died in 2004. I am a great fan of him now that I have heard some of his compositions! Quote
Stereojack Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 He's great on the Elvin Jones-Jimmy Garrison album "Illuminations", and also on Ronnie Mathews "Doin' the Thang". I prefer him on bari. Quote
fasstrack Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 I prefer him on bari. You and everyone else, it seems. Especially record producers. But he prefers himself on tenor. I'm starting to realize why Fats Waller was frustrated over how no one took his organ playing seriously...................... Quote
bertrand Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 Fasstrack, Are you referring to Gerry Eastman the guitarist? Did he recently pass? I didn't think he was that old. He used to be a member of Super Nova, a great band based in D.C., although I guess he left a while ago. Very sad to hear this. Bertrand. Quote

Sorry if that wasn't made clear. It's Joel, BTW. Quote

He used to be in Philly Joe Jones' band, that I used to go hear quite a lot back in the late '70's or so. He was always on tenor. Quote
blind-blake Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 Anyone hear this one? http://www.dustygroove.com/images/products...lectio_101b.jpg Quote
Joe Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 Anyone hear this one? http://www.dustygroove.com/images/products...lectio_101b.jpg Fine date; Monk program; all tenor. My favorite date with Davis on baritone is the aforementioned Dorham JAZZ CONTEMPORARY... which also, IMO, has some of the finest KD on record. And there's a recent Japanese issue that adds bonus tracks. Quote

If I was in Michigan I would hire you for my kid's birthday----if he were younger than 4. Actually, that outfit might scare a kid. Then maybe they'd grow up neurotic. Unlike me What tunes are on Jazz Contemporary? I'm confused. But you knew that............ Quote

clifford_thornton Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 Actually, by NOT mentioning me, I too am insulted. Quote
Joe Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 'S'all good, what for being just a thang. No mention yet of Davis' INGIA! on Strata East. No masterpiece by any means, but an interesting incursion by the saxophonist into a more electric mode (Louis Davis on the gee-tar, Ronnie Mathews on occasional el-p). And its an "all baritone" date... Quote
Peter Friedman Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 I have this one: Charles Davis / Barry Harris - Reflections - Red 123247-2 It's a quartet with Peter Washington and Ben Riley. Charles Davis plays tenor on this one. His playing is ok, but it is the playing of Barry Harris that makes this a good session. I find Charles baritone playing much much more interesting than his tenor work. Quote

Hot Ptah Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 I enjoy his playing on several Sun Ra albums, including Sun Song, Sound of Joy, Supersonic Jazz, Angels and Demons at Play, and Visits Planet Earth. Quote
Tom in RI Posted March 17, 2009 Report Posted March 17, 2009 Davis plays well alongside Clifford Jordan on Dizzy Reese's date on Beehive Records. Has anyone heard this? http://www.roots-archives.com/release/1931 Quote
