Oscar Peterson "Original Duos Recordings 1950-1951"

Found this forthcoming release on HMV. It's listed among the European issues of the next batch of Verve Originals, is on the Verve label and at the same price point, yet doesn't seem to have been part of the US batch.

Any ideas what it is? It might fill the gaps on the Mosaic.

The Mosaic has 1951-1953 trio recordings, so the European 1950-1951 duo set will not fill the gaps on the Mosaic.

OP's earliest US sessions were in the duo format, until Barney Kessel was added in 1951 to make it a trio. All previously released material has been out on Classics, but if they could add the unissued tracks and make it the bestsounding release of this material so far, it would be a very interesting release of course.

I don't quite get the comparison of Peterson and Tatum. It's more like Peterson and Nat Cole to my ears... if Cole wouldn't have turned into the big superstar singer, he might be known and estimated nowadays as the superior piano player he actually was.

Cole is one of my favorites and really a link between swing and bebop, in my opinion. Peterson got a lot from him but lacked that all important thing called taste. Listen to Nat on Body and Soul if you want to hear an artist - Peterson had a lot on the ball harmonically, but just sounded like a jackhammer to me. Patterns, patterns, and more patterns. There's a famous Miles Davis interview (printed in Jazz Panorama) that, for me, nails it, re-Peterson's problems.

I agree. Cole's playing was always interesting, Peterson's more often than not just busy and fatiguing to listen to. Peterson's sidemen were often more interesting; for instance, I got the 1951-1953 Mosaic because of Barney Kessel

I still feel the same to some extent, but I grew to enjoy OP's music a lot over the past few months (as I've mentioned elsewhere).

I merely wanted to point out that Cole is much more a point of reference for OP than Tatum, in my opinion (YMMV - ha, done it, used that silly acronym for the first time!)

Yes, that may be... I'm only into his earlier music, roughly 52-64, after that I don't have that much (well, most of his MPS albums, but he recorded a huge pile of albums I don't feel like getting more of those later ones...)

For me, the connection was that the playing of both Tatum and Peterson was largely BOMBASTIC. To these ears, Cole was not.
