J.A.W.
I'm on the fence with this one. The number of outakes and the roller rink organ tracks put me off a bit. Any idea how many sets remain? You should get it (IMHO), the material has never sounded this good and the booklet is GREAT. The organ is off putting, I agree, but Lester sounded great on that session. There are outtakes, but they only add (for me), as I love Lester. I would not hesitate getting this if you are: a Count Basie Orchestra fan, a Prez fan, pre-WWI jazz fan. I listen to this set often. Pre-WWI? Whoops Pre-WWII, that's what I get for posting at work. lol. I was just kidding By the way, "pre-WWII" doesn't quite cover it; for Americans "pre-WWII" is pre-1941, of course, but WWII began in Europe in 1939. I'd prefer "pre-bop" (just nitpicking )
sidewinder
Amazing to see that it's still on 'Last Chance' tonight. If I'd known that I would have played it cool and held out a bit longer.

No idea how many sets but buy it; reasons? Either you'll like/love it and you have a great Mosiac set in your collection Or you listen to it and don't like/love it and you sell it on. Besides how many people you know have a CD with a track by Glenn Hardman with 'Upright Organ Blues'?
mikeweil
My set arrived this morning. Now I can relax .... The booklet is one of the finest Mosaic booklets I have ever seen, Loren Schoenberg's essay is superb. The sound quality is excellent, and Pres is the greatest saxophone player to ever grace this planet. If one has ears, he must love Pres' playing ... The Pres forever! It's # 4139, in case anybody's interested.

AllenLowe
I picked it up too - good sound - though I will say that the Smith/Jones sessions sound best on the old double LP I have (can't remember the exact title right now) - Edited March 29, 2012 by AllenLowe
king ubu
One of those Lester Young Story volumes? The Smith/Jones is also on the Band #1 box (minus the alternate, I think). Haven't compared but that one sounds very good to me, too.

JSngry
Yeah, that was a pretty damn delightful package in every regard, Super Chief was.
sidewinder
My Lester set has finally arrived (along with the MJQ set). What a fine job Mosaic did with the Young/Basie - lovely big booklet full of great photos. The bigger and more recent MJQ set by contrast - although it sounds fantastic - has a scimpier booklet with a less robust cover. Sign of the times I guess ! And the damn border agency dinged me with EU import charges. Edited April 11, 2012 by sidewinder

Clunky
And the damn border agency dinged me with EU import charges. One area where their commitment and competence are not in question. Indeed ! what is the EU import charge, it's a while since I received a Mosaic, is this something new in addition to VAT and the Post Office/DHL handling fee ?? sidewinder
Looking at it, it's actually the PO handling fee - although the sticker says UK Border Agency. £8 just for the priviledge of having the box opened ! At least I must count my blessings that the sets at least arrived in one piece. Edited April 11, 2012 by sidewinder
