clifford_thornton
Archie Shepp-Chet Baker shortly before Chet´s death. Supposedly there are recordings of Chet and Frank Wright from around the same time.
BeBop
Didn't see mention of Cecil Taylor with Mary Lou Williams. I'm past the point of seeing an Archie Shepp pairing with ANYONE as odd. Vide: Shepp with Whitney Houston (circa 1982)
Chuck Nessa
Thelonious Monk and Dave Brubeck playing together on a late 1960s Columbia record. Thelonious Monk and Joe Turner playing together, Berlin, 1969 Thanks for the link. I didn't know about this and am a big fan of both. Thanks again. B. Clugston
Once saw Al Green playing percussion with Sun Ra on David Sanborn's Night Shift. I seem to recall Green was being a bit of a disrespectful ham--shrugging his shoulders a lot and changing percussion instruments. Speaking of Sanborn, he can sometimes turn up in avant garde settings. There's the Hemphill album with Tim Berne and he's sat in with John Zorn and Berne. Hardbopjazz
I remembered another one. In 2004 I caught a Jazz Mobile show. Clark Terry was the leader. He had Matana Roberts playing alto. After her first solo, Clark said something like, come inside, your playing way too out.
randyhersom
Clark Terry and Cecil Taylor, except it worked a whole lot better than Kenny Dorham and Cecil Taylor. Kevin Mahagony and Randy Travis. Vince Gill and Diana Krall. Maybe Strangest of all: David Murray and John Hicks.

AllenLowe
well, I've done a recording with David Murray/Loren Schoenberg/Doc Cheatham (more than a pair, I know)
clifford_thornton
Yeah, I know - and yet it doesn't seem THAT odd. Allen, you've paired yourself with a pretty diverse range of people. Murray and Hicks doesn't seem at all odd to me... after all, Hicks worked with Pharoah, Simmons, McBee, lots of heavyweights.

JohnS
Murray and Hicks doesn't seem at all odd to me... after all, Hicks worked with Pharoah, Simmons, McBee, lots of heavyweights. That's right Hicks is on more than a dozen Murray led dates and several more with Murray as sideman.

Ted O'Reilly
I have a Toronto radio aircheck from July 16, 1983 featuring Lee Konitz with Sammy Price on piano. Bassist is Neil Swainson with Terry Clarke on drums. Leader and music director is Jim Galloway on soprano sax.
