So what was the problem with the Selects that made them unprofitable?  And at what "per disc" price would they have had to charge for them to be equally profitable to the big boxes?  Was it just an economy of scale? - in terms of the amount of cost per release, regardless of whether it was a 3-disc Select, or a 6-disc big-box?

I'm sure I knew the answer years ago, but have long since forgotten.

I don't like to bitch, but love the Select series, hate the packaging.

My Select collection: Carter/ Bradford 36, Andrew Hill 16 & 23, Don Pullen 13, McCoy Tyner 25.

yes, the music came as quite a surprise to me - very, very good!

For me it's a real nice memento of Sam's last UK tour with an orchestra plus his own rhythm section, done back in 2007 I think. Quite a few of the arrangements are familiar !

Never caught him live ... and am not that familiar with his big band music, so .... would love to have such memories though!

Yeah - the gig at Bath was particularly memorable. I got to see him put away his assorted instruments, signed my Mosaic booklet and a few LPs and reminisced a bit about the Blue Note recordings and his favourite LP cover design ('A New Conception'). That was an evening and a half..

Glad I already got the Quincy, Woody, and Ellington Small Group sets, as there are no funds left right now due to unforeseen circumstances. Sound on all is excellent. Hopefully finances will recover before anything else runs low that I still have on the wish list ...

I'm not sure if I will regret not getting the Oliver Nelson set  - but I have some of it and didn't like "Sound Pieces" very much - guess I like him more as a tenor soloist than arranger.

Never heard "The Kennedy Dream" ... I have a lot of CDs with Nelson arranging, and like some of it a lot, but never find it as fascinating as Quincy, McFarland, Thad Jones, Gerald Wilson, just to name a few.

The following Mosaic box set is running low. On content that is! Some eBay clown is selling an EMPTY Woody Shaw Muse box for $100! No CDs, no book. Just a piece of cardboard. Asshole profiteer (cdsundays from Ottawa Canada).
