MartyJazz Posted March 20, 2015 Report Posted March 20, 2015 Some time ago I dubbed my LP copies of "Flight for Four" and "Self Determination Music" to CD-R and have greatly enjoyed listening to this music alone in my car. Great stuff. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 20, 2015 Report Posted March 20, 2015 This group and their modest output of four LPs has been my greatest obscure listening pleasure for about 16 years. I wish it had not taken almost ten years to find them after I got interested in jazz. now is the time to search for new Bradfords - there a bunch of good ones. Quote
jcam_44 Posted March 20, 2015 Report Posted March 20, 2015 Just ordered their mosaic set before its unavailable. I'll see Bradford with Golia next week. Quote

The OOP "Kampen" from NoBusiness (vinyl only) is very much worth looking for, too ... in addition to "Silver Cornet" that is, which needn't be "looked for", rather than just be bought! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 20, 2015 Report Posted March 20, 2015 Kampen is dandy as are Reknes and Dragon. Quote
Clunky Posted March 20, 2015 Report Posted March 20, 2015 Kampen went OOP pretty quickly. Small run like the rest of NB's vinyl but a sign surely that the jazz cognoscenti have alert antennae for Bradford ( I hope) Quote
jlhoots Posted March 27, 2015 Report Posted March 27, 2015 Kampen is dandy as are Reknes and Dragon. Thanks Chuck. Got Reknes & Dragon from Squidco. Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted April 24, 2015 Report Posted April 24, 2015 First spin - nice record BUT.... Compared to Flight for Four, the sound (remaster quality??) isn't anywhere as good and I think the two basses lessen the groove. The session never gets to those rare heights that 2 or 3 of the 5 tunes on the International Phonograph re-issue hits. Everything here is less pronounced, less exciting and less captivating to me as a listener. I wonder loudly how much of this bad to do with the session or the remastering. Glad I have it but I wish Jonathan could have handled the reissue. Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted April 24, 2015 Report Posted April 24, 2015 Btw John Carter is brilliant throughout. Quote
David Ayers Posted April 25, 2015 Report Posted April 25, 2015 Folks seem to be forgetting that it was Martin Davidson who issued the first Carter/Bradford on CD about twenty years ago, and has kept it continuously in print, even remastered it again. That was followed a couple of years later by Hat's CD reissue of Comin' On, which was around a long time and subsequently again remastered by them. Then the 2006 Hat CD reissue of Seeking. It is good that Emanem and Hat kept the door open for the more complete treatment this catalog is now getting in the twilight of CD. Quote

adh1907 Posted December 12, 2023 Report Posted December 12, 2023 I am listening to the LP reissue. It does sound a bit muddy. The sax and trumpet are too far back in the mix. Similar to the CD from the comments above. I am also wondering why Henry Franklin who I understand is the second bass player is not credited on the sleeve. That said, there are some great performances on this. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted December 12, 2023 Report Posted December 12, 2023 Franklin wasn't credited on the original, either. Quote
adh1907 Posted Tuesday at 09:42 PM Report Posted Tuesday at 09:42 PM Listening to this again recently, noticed that ‘Eye of the storm’ is ‘Una muy bonita’ in all but name. I thought there may be some Bobby Bradford connection but John Carter is the composer, supposedly. Quote
Guy Berger Posted 2 hours ago Report Posted 2 hours ago I love everything I’ve heard from this group - the Mosaic, Flight for Four, Self Determination Music, and the album on Dark Tree. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted 1 hour ago Report Posted 1 hour ago They were great. Bobby Bradford made an appearance in my dream last night. Hope he's doing all right; was fun to interview him years ago. Quote
