Time flies, I saw him with Thad Jones-Mel Lewis in 1978, he was one of the major soloists, he and Steve Coleman played and soloed on alto....., it was 43 years ago and I still remember it.

GoGo Penguin - A Humdrum Star (Blue Note 2018)

220px-A-Humdrum-Star.jpg

This really is "jazz" as brand name rather than genre.

Some good stuff pokes through occasionally, but that's it.

One trick pony but it's a good trick. Saw them live and after three tunes you could predict exactly what form the rest would take. Exciting though, for one sitting.

Haven't bothered with the last couple of albums, maybe I'd be surprised

Jazz Not Jazz? Not that that matters dreadfully

I concur. I just meant that this is a jazz record in the same way that Nirvana Unplugged is a 'folk' record.

I agree that GoGo Penguin is actually okay. Too heavy on the repetitive cinematic piano and 'real instruments' hip-hop loops tropes, but the bits where the bass gets in there are pretty good. I like how Manchester seems to be positioning itself as a sort of jazz scene equivalent to 1990s Bristol.

Who else from Manchester should I be checking out, Halsall apart?

What NYC musicians had to do during the lockdown of clubs.

It may have damaged their income, but judging from this album it left their jazz talents untouched.:)

Really enjoying this. I liked the cover photo so thought I'd give a spin  No names I know. A bit more straight ahead than much of my listening to contemporary releases

Alice Coltrane "Kirtan: Turaya Sings" LP 2. This was on sale for 12 dollars on amazon so I picked it up; I have the Japanese cd version, which sounds brighter by a bit.

All are regulars at Smalls. Try Smalls' live stream available daily on YouTube.

As to straight ahead, I find this is what young musicians of Sherman's age are doing.

Here's that front line of Magnarelli and Weldon with other youngsters:

I was listening on Spotify and that's the image they gave.
