I saw Gary Smulyan with the Woody Herman Thundering Herd in the late 70´s I think. Such a great bari player. Fast company here also !

My trumpet player did play with Gary Smulyan !!!

The Kenny Burrell Quartet - The Tender Gender (Cadet, 1966)
with Richard Wyands (p), Martin Rivera (b), and Oliver Jackson (d)

KB swings every single note.  And that tone!  Day-um!

Kenny Burrell - Soul Call (Prestige, 1964)

Another (overlooked?) Burrell album that's a favorite of mine.

I don't know that one, as good as I might expect?

Btw one of these hilarious cover photographies from MPS in the 70's ....

Jimmy Smith – It's Necessary

This record is crazy good. I'd never listened to it before today. A whole other level.

Yes it is good. It sounds like Misha Mengelberg and Han Bennink recording a duo album in the seventies, released on ICP. Exactly like that.

Mengelberg's in particularly good form.

Great find at a nearby used cd store ($5!). "Late" Shaw and a young Geri Allen in cracking form.
(Just noticed that the cover painting was by Gil Melle.)

Amazingly diverse display of British jazz talent here: Tubby Hayes, Ronnie Scott, Joe Harriott, Dick Morrissey - and Humphrey Lyttelton!

Both of those Harry South 4CD box sets are brilliant.
