jazzbo Posted December 13, 2022 Report Posted December 13, 2022 Donald Byrd "Free Form" Blue Note Universal Japan UHQCD followed by I love this recording. So much fun. A performance was broadcast on TV in the days before videotape and so far no one has found a Kinescope and put it out–I’d love to see it. Also Columbia/Sony had a 2 cd reissue planned and even advertised. . . that they ended up never releasing as the producer was let go from Columbia. A huge shame! I’d love to hear the extra material! That's a BIG bummer that Sony hasn't seen fit to release it. Maybe some day? Hopefully!?! Quote

I asked Michael Cuscuna some time back if we might ever see it--he said no. I surmised it was because it was a Phil Schaap production about to be launched when he was canned from Columbia. I think the additional material was likely a recording of a performance or a rehearsal. Quote

I saw a screening of one in NY at a Duke Ellington conference a few years ago. Unfortunately none of them are in colour. 2 hours ago, Chuck Nessa said: I'm still pissed at Schaap's editing error on Such Sweet Thunder. The correct (mono) take is on a cd entitled "Ralph Ellison: Living with Music". (These 2 replies together reveal me to be a pedant.) Edited December 14, 2022 by medjuck Quote
