Weird good. 
It’s a fusion record but very murky. Bits made me think of Jimmy Giuffre or “Planet Caravan” by Black Sabbath. That kind of weird.

love this recording. So much fun. A performance was broadcast on TV in the days before videotape and so far no one has found a Kinescope and put it out–I’d love to see it.

Also Columbia/Sony had a 2 cd reissue planned and even advertised. . . that they ended up never releasing as the producer was let go from Columbia. A huge shame! I’d love to hear the extra material!

Interesting.  I had no idea that there was more music from A Drum Is a Woman.   

That's a BIG bummer that Sony hasn't seen fit to release it.  Maybe some day?  Hopefully!?!

I asked Michael Cuscuna some time back if we might ever see it--he said no. I surmised it was because it was a Phil Schaap production about to be launched when he was canned from Columbia. I think the additional material was likely a recording of a performance or a rehearsal.

Kinescopes of it do exist.  I saw a screening of one in NY at a Duke Ellington conference a few years ago.  Unfortunately none of them are in colour.

The correct (mono) take is on a cd entitled "Ralph Ellison: Living with Music".
