Brawny slightly Avant adjacent Chicago big band with a commitment to the tradition. Similar concept to Kahil El Zabar's smaller groups. Early 00s weren't a great time for mainstream jazz in my opinion. This is one of my favourites from that era. Edited February 3, 2023 by Rabshakeh Quote

mikeweil Posted February 3, 2023 Report Posted February 3, 2023 (edited) Soundwise, a disappointment. Harsh piano sound, all miked closely. No room ambience. Cannot believe David Baker engineered this. Typical quickshot 1979 sound. But they very good. Sam Jones with Kenny Barron and Keith Copeland. Two alternates on this CD.
