An Evening With Joe Henderson (Red)image.jpeg.bf9061fc5758790bbb00ff5cf432f293.jpeg

I heard different things about that CD: Some complained about I don´t know what...., but at first sight at least Henderson and Al Foster must be THE Dream theme. If Haden plays a strong and driving bass and does not those diatonic solos that sometimes get on my nerves, it might be greatest.
But I doubt Al Foster would have played with a too laid back and to diatonic sounding bass player. He was the first drummer I saw in my live (with Miles and Dave Liebman in the mid seventies) and until now one of my favourites....
And Henderson I liked from the first hearing in 1977 or so.....

Curious about the reason the cd reissue omits the color red from the original lp pressing.

I had thought the tunes on that album are on the first Miles Davis Prestige LP "Dig" ?.

Conception as played by Miles is strange anyway. Its a semitone up than the original (in C and not in Db, and with only the A section like the original compositon, while the B section is completly else, obviously written by Miles himself. It´s unsymmetric and even the music teachers and analysists are not in agreement about the number of bars....maybe not even Miles himself....)

The strange thing is that I have it on the back cover of a Howard McGhee CD from BN, where you have an allstar band with Howard, J.J.Johnson, Brew Moore, Kenny Drew, aaaaah .....on bass, and Max Roach on drums.
And then after the tracks with Maggie follows some trio tracks, very well done by Kenny Drew who was very good then, also with early Miles at Birdland and so......, he sounds like a younger brother of Bud Powell ......

Nothing's wrong here with Charlie Haden, rest assured .... nevertheless I do prefer Joe Henderson's studio recording for Red Records (from 1991) with comparatively unsung Rufus Reid and Al Foster (here he doesn't sit out during bass solos injecting additional 🔥🔥) ....

Rufus Reid is very fine and of course we heard him on dozens occasions with Dex....

The only thing is on studio records the drums are not as well heard, I can listen to them only with headphonse to get a glimpse of the ride cymbal....., I like it ringing really strong !

I meant unsung "comparatively" to Charlie Haden .... no disrespect to Rufus Reid intended ....

Amazing man. Amazing works.
Bohor, from the Nonesuch LP, is in my top 3 of favorite works of all time,
but the late 90s release thru EMF flattened the sound and
shaved off the final seconds.
The version on this recording brings back its immensity of sound.

Interesting, I went to a discovery day of Xenakis works (and some terrific biographical film) performed by the London Sinfonietta several years ago and was bowled over by a lot of the music but for some reason never followed it up with any extensive listening.

Since then he's always been a name that intrigues. Maybe I could start again with this

I have that 2 LP set. Wow. That takes me back a long time. It's a good one, too. Along with "Solar Explorations."

A double reed Chapin / Ehrlich front line, with Bill Ward on vibes.

That's a good one, haven't played it in years mind you
