Rabshakeh Posted September 9 Posted September 9 (edited) Tim Sparks – Little Princess: Tim Sparks Plays The Music Of Naftule Brandwein Sparks has been the big discovery of my recent Tzadik binge so far. He is a finger picking guitarist with a style that mixes American roots (but more John Fahey than Ry Cooder) with a strong dose of Brazilian / Portuguese classical / folk styles, a la Baden Powell. For some reason Tzadik had the idea of setting him to work on klezmer and chassidishe folk as well as, inevitably the "Masada Songbook". The records really work. This one (an adaptation of the only Klezmer musician whose work I've really enjoyed, Naftule Brandwein) is probably the least of them. I'd recommend "Tanz" to start with, along with "The Rebbe's Table". It's one of the few conscious genre fusion projects that seem really natural. Edited September 9 by Rabshakeh Quote

Tobi has forgiven me for leaving him twice yesterday and we had a nice walk listening to the forest before dawn. I’m listening as I move discs in that are housed in 2 cd cases into two separate jewel cases so that I can sell them to Half Price Books for their pittance. Boyd Raeburn And His Orchestra “Boyd Meets Stravinski” Savoy/Denon cd From AllMusic: “This superb album is comprised of tracks recorded by the band at its creative peak in the mid-'40s. The arrangements and original compositions by pianist George Handy acknowledge developments in 20th-century classical music up to that time, melding poly-tonality, shifting meters, and irregular rhythms with bebop and contemporary big band techniques. The musicianship is absolutely top-notch. In terms of ensemble execution, the Raeburn band was nearly unsurpassed, and the solos – while often talking a backseat to the compositions themselves – are frequently excellent. Of particular note is the work of the Johnny Hodges-inspired alto saxophonist Bothwell. Handy’s fanciful arrangements occasionally go off the deep end, but the extent of his creativity was considerable, and the balance of artistry and kitsch usually weighs in favor of the former.” Quote

Stompin at the Savoy Posted September 10 Posted September 10 I was listening to some Artie Shaw interviews mentioned on Jazz Gazette and that got me started thinking about items 7-14 (left) on Disk 4 of Shaw's Self Portrait set - Shaw gets boppish with an orchestra in 1949. The sound is intensely trebly even with some equalizer tweaks but the music is pretty good. Could use a remaster. Quote

jazzbo Posted September 10 Posted September 10 Nice and cool this morning, and the rain from last evening has the ground moist and the air feels great against the skin. A great spell of cool weather ahead of us I believe. Started off the morning listening to ne of my favorite Andrew Hill albums, “Black Fire” on teh Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Edition cd; Joe Henderson fit so well with Hill’s compositions and playing on this one that one could have hoped for an alternate reality where Joe and Andrew had a long run together like Charlie Rouse and Thelonious Monk did. 400×400 27.4 KB Then I moved on to “Olé Coltrane” the fourth disc in the new Coltrane Mono 1960-1964 box set. A really good fit after “Black Fire,” and sounding great. Quote
