A neighbor had a large party last night and the quiet is welcome this morning, as every morning. I couldn’t resist, as an obsessive Coltrane listener, pre-ordering the new Mono Atlantic box set, which arrived yesterday. Interestingly this cd box set (mirroring the LP version) uses French original covers, which are nice to have. I’m listening to “Giant Steps” and it definitely sounds great. Quote

I'm a great believer in "jazz adjacency" and these guys did collaborate with some of the 1990s widdle fusion gang. But even I have a hard time seeing them as even jazz adjacent. It is all a bit US style progressive rock for my tastes. I'm not a Journey fan and it just sounds like Journey to my ears. One thing I would say about Dream Theater is that they're good enough musicians that the music does at least allow itself a looseness of delivery. My pet hate with progressive and jazz metal is the excessive tightness of execution: all the time signatures etc. Quote

What do you think of this new John Coltrane: 1960 - 1964 cd set? Haven't really heard much about this. How does this compare to The Heavyweight Champion set (which I have). Is this just another remastering? Does it contain the same music as Heavyweight? Quote
