Just spinning the first disc.

About the foto on page 3 of the book. The woman is Pia Beck the Dutch boogie pianist/singer/entertainer. The man talking to Norman Granz  I am 99% certain is Lou van Rees the dutch impresario. Het got a lot of greats to the Netherlands like Marlene Dietrich and Frank Sinatra.

What's the consensus on this one? Essential or just fun?

I'm on the fence, and already have had a lot of fun in my life?

Or more to the point, how much Hawk is there, and how much Pres?

Not much discussion about this one since its release. Hardly any at all, actually...

Now that it's on Last Chance, I'm trying to decide if it's something I need. Any thoughts from those who have the set?

(It's also on sale right now, for those who are wanting to pick it up before it's gone...)

I suppose that most of my comments are on posts in the listening thread as I was listening. I really like this set. The mastering is excellent. I'm a big fan of this period of jazz and there are great performances.

Vol-16-Side-5 One O’ Clock Jump Clef MG Vol. 16 – Part V

Note: Some discographies add Gene Krupa to One O’Clock Jump.

At about 0:10 into this track, there is a rough edit and what sounds like Ella Ftizgerald’s voice. It is very possible that this is another one of the edits Norman Granz had to perform since Fitzgerald still was under a contractual obligation to Decca Records.

So that's 32 different groups: Hawk is in six of them; Pres is in twelve; Roy is in fourteen.

As a bonus, Ben Webster is in six and Diz is in three.

Not to mention, Benny Carter, Illinois Jacquet and Stan Getz.
