I've been playing the Conn twofer and digging it a lot. Dunno why it didn't grab me before. I unfairly dissed it upthread.

But I'll still pass on the reissue.

Exactly what I need to do: I need to live with this set.  Earlier in my listening life, I would've chucked this, but as I get older, I live with it, because as JSngry said, Ike is a baaadaaass man, and he is! So I'm hoping this set grows on me over more listens.

PS I really like everything else, and I really love Ike's tone, I just have to get past that hoaky-ass sounding organ!

Being Catholic too, I totally relate! "Catholic churches were dark & somber in general, so it makes sense that I'd think that about the organ playing."

My parents being devout Catholics allowed me after my confirmation to attend church by myself (lols) because I didn't, but the the funny thing is when I actually did go, and they started that tithing BS mid-mass, with somebody playing that hoaky organ music (hoaky church, not hoaky rolling rink) they would hold that basket on that 20 foot-long arm (I swear that pole was as long as a football field!) rattling that basket in front of me for what seem like hours, I was like, can I help you? I'm like, this is my 7-11 money!

This discussion of organs  strikes me as a bit strange.

First - Church organs are often pipe organs that sound (to me at least) dramatically different than Hammond electric organs frequently played by jazz musicians.Though there are other electric organs also used in jazz and other settings.

Second - Jazz organists do not all sound the same. Compare for example Jimmy Smith with Wild Bill Davis. Also think of Larry Young, Don Patton, Milt Buckner, Akiko, Shirley Scott, Mike LeDonne, Johnny Hammond Smith, Lonnie Smith,Bill Doggett,  and on and on.

So to refer to jazz organists as sounding like Roller Rink Roly Poly organists is, in my view far far from accurate.

Sorry, Don Patterson Not Patton.
