Holy Ghost Posted Sunday at 11:26 AM Report Posted Sunday at 11:26 AM On 9/5/2025 at 8:47 PM, T.D. said: I've been playing the Conn twofer and digging it a lot. Dunno why it didn't grab me before. I unfairly dissed it upthread. But I'll still pass on the reissue. Exactly what I need to do: I need to live with this set. Earlier in my listening life, I would've chucked this, but as I get older, I live with it, because as JSngry said, Ike is a baaadaaass man, and he is! So I'm hoping this set grows on me over more listens. PS I really like everything else, and I really love Ike's tone, I just have to get past that hoaky-ass sounding organ! Quote
Holy Ghost Posted Sunday at 11:58 AM Report Posted Sunday at 11:58 AM Being Catholic too, I totally relate! "Catholic churches were dark & somber in general, so it makes sense that I'd think that about the organ playing." My parents being devout Catholics allowed me after my confirmation to attend church by myself (lols) because I didn't, but the the funny thing is when I actually did go, and they started that tithing BS mid-mass, with somebody playing that hoaky organ music (hoaky church, not hoaky rolling rink) they would hold that basket on that 20 foot-long arm (I swear that pole was as long as a football field!) rattling that basket in front of me for what seem like hours, I was like, can I help you? I'm like, this is my 7-11 money! Quote
JSngry Posted Sunday at 05:33 PM Report Posted Sunday at 05:33 PM How could you dance with that pole in front of you? See, Holy Ghost is moving now! Quote
Peter Friedman Posted yesterday at 04:51 PM Report Posted yesterday at 04:51 PM This discussion of organs strikes me as a bit strange. First - Church organs are often pipe organs that sound (to me at least) dramatically different than Hammond electric organs frequently played by jazz musicians.Though there are other electric organs also used in jazz and other settings. Second - Jazz organists do not all sound the same. Compare for example Jimmy Smith with Wild Bill Davis. Also think of Larry Young, Don Patton, Milt Buckner, Akiko, Shirley Scott, Mike LeDonne, Johnny Hammond Smith, Lonnie Smith,Bill Doggett, and on and on. So to refer to jazz organists as sounding like Roller Rink Roly Poly organists is, in my view far far from accurate. Sorry, Don Patterson Not Patton. Quote
JSngry Posted yesterday at 06:08 PM Report Posted yesterday at 06:08 PM For a lot of Black Churches, the church organ WAS a B3! https://www.npr.org/2016/01/03/461818544/how-the-hammond-organ-sound-laid-the-tracks-for-gospels-hit-train Quote
Pim Posted 14 hours ago Report Posted 14 hours ago This isn’t the first time I hear people having trouble with the sound of an organ. There’s a community of flute haters too. Of course it’s all just personal taste. Though I still prefer piano I really grew into the sound of it. I mostly found out I dislike a specific sound which is a technical thing I find hard to describe but let’s say it’s the more dull side of the instrument. There’s also a more biting and funky side I really enjoy. There’s also way Jimmy Smith plays on Root Down for example: damn! Also have a couple of John Patton and Larry Young records I really enjoy. T.D. Posted 8 hours ago Report Posted 8 hours ago I discovered the "roller-rink" organist trope via Bob Blumenthal's updated (2004) liner notes to the RVG CD of Heavy Soul. Freddie Roach (1931-1980), with a more subdued (detractors might say roller-rink) sound than most organists of the period, might be an acquired taste, but for this listener it is a taste worth acquiring... T.D. Posted 6 hours ago Report Posted 6 hours ago (edited) Sorry, I misrecalled the liner note author Bob Blumenthal...I play chess and must have subliminally mixed him up with the "Blumenfeld Counter Gambit". 🤪 Edited 6 hours ago by T.D. Quote
T.D. Posted 3 hours ago Report Posted 3 hours ago Thanks. Hard to explain the blunder, as I had the CD liner notes right in front of me. Quote
JSngry Posted 1 hour ago Report Posted 1 hour ago I'll take Bob Blumenthal seriously about Black organ sounds...when? Never? Bon Porter, probably. It's a problem for me when critical orthodoxy is informed by cultural homogeneity. Things become more about projection than actual understanding. Quote
T.D. Posted 51 minutes ago Report Posted 51 minutes ago (edited) Is "ballpark organist" a genre? I grew up in the Chicago area...Nancy Faust, who played at Comiskey Park for decades and Chicago Stadium for a few years, was a big deal. https://chicagoreader.com/music/the-secret-history-of-chicago-music/nancy-faust-organist-white-sox-comiskey/ Edited 46 minutes ago by T.D.
