Just thinking out loud (wife, is like wha, now? at 2:30?) could Herbie and Ron record a duo record, maybe a trio with a guest drummer.  Just to nod the very best of the best bands Miles ever compiled in the mid-60's. Maybe some such records may be out there already, but why not one more. I'd buy it

The two of them will be sharing a stage at the Hollywood Bowl August 19th for a concert advertised as "Herbie Hancock celebrates Miles Davis" (or something like that).  Marcus Miller will also be there.  Not sure who's playing with whom.

Herbie Hancock. This August and September, I am sincerely looking forward to sharing the stage not once but twice with a dear friend from the dawn of my career: Mr. Herbie Hancock.

Herbie and I met as part of Miles Davis's Second Great Quintet, alongside Miles himself, Wayne Shorter and Tony Williams. The synergy of that band– the trust we had in each other– was a true joy to play in. I used to call it a laboratory band: Miles was the chemist, and we were the chemicals, interacting in new and interesting ways at each performance.

Herbie and I continued to play together well after the Quintet had run its course. Over the years, he and I have collaborated on not one, not two, but 117 albums (both as bandleaders and sidemen)! Among the noteworthy residents of that list include my album Third Plane, his albums Empyrean Isles and Maiden Voyage, Wayne Shorter’s Speak No Evil, and Freddie Hubbard’s famous Red Clay.

In 2026, we shall share the bandstand twice in honor of Miles Davis’s centennial: first on August 19th at the Hollywood Bowl and second at the Monterey Jazz Festival on September 27th.

In addition to this year's centennials, this month is 60 years since Coltrane's tour of Japan - time to listen once again to the 4-CD set and the extra extra long My Favorite Things.

Happy to see the announcement for these. The announcement states that they are using "the latest digital sources from Verve in the US," so hopefully they will be using the same mastering that was used for the recent US vinyl releases. The first three of these were released on vinyl in the Acoustic Sounds series, mastered by Matthew Lutthans, and the A Love Supreme mono vinyl was mastered by Ryan K. Smith and released outside of that series. I will probably go ahead and order all of these...although I question the need for A Love Supreme in mono, especially considering that this is possibly just a fold down from stereo.

I've always been disappointed that no outtakes from 'Live at Birdland' have popped up.  As good as the three live tracks on the album are, I would have thought anything else recorded that night would be worthwhile.  Great performances for that great band.

Well, almost 50 additional minutes of that concert have been circulating with pretty good sound quality: Mr. PC and Lonnie's Lament
