John L Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 (edited) Thanks, Romualdo! I actually downloaded at lot of that first session somewhere online. I can't remember where. I don't have any of the second session, where I presume the pending Giant Steps and Satellite are coming from. Edited February 6 by John L Quote
Ken Dryden Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 Here's hoping for as complete a box as possible. I am not excited about buying excerpts, only to have a larger set issues a year later. Quote

Milestones Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 (edited) It would be interesting to hear (among others) "Equinox," "Mr. Syms," "Body and Soul," and "Spiral." I guess some of these were cut off..."Spiral at 1'47." Edited February 6 by Milestones Quote

What's interesting is that the newly announced Giant Steps and Satellite are quite a bit longer than the versions mentioned in the Coltrane reference... So if it's the same gig, it's a better, more complete tape... (If you think about it, it's actually strange that all tracks mentioned in that entry are marked incomplete, maybe this is some sort of edited version that made it into the reference) Quote

I think I only have three copies of the original 'A Love Supreme' on my shelves (Complete Quartet box, complete Impulse Albums box, expanded version with the Shepp/Davis outtakes and the Antibes live ALS). I also have most of the first recording (which circulated as a bootleg), but I don't have the second recording at all, the one that includes Giant Steps and Satellite. If Tiberi recorded the second one, were there other taper(s) in Philadelphia besides Tiberi at the time? (I can't recall the name, but I remember hearing there was one). The sound quality of the first recording is terrible, so I hope the second one is at least a little better. Edited February 6 by mhatta Quote
John L Posted February 7 Report Posted February 7 I just re-listened to the first recording. While sound is indeed terrible at the very beginning, it gets significantly better. Loud audience voices are the primary distraction. The music is fantastic. Quote

I don't know why exactly, but this morning the phrase Where were you when the Tiberi tapes were released? popped into my head. 😁 My next thought was: Acquisition Moratorium until September! (Unless Miles Davis's centennial in May brings about an unheard early 70's concert.🤪) Quote
tranemonk Posted February 10 Report Posted February 10 This is perhaps a cynical question (or I'm just a cranky old man - or both)... but what's the likelihood of a set that is mostly composed of incomplete takes and/or mediocre sound? My concern is that we're already getting a lot hype for a fuller boxed set that's not gonna come out for six months (at least), which I'm fearful is going to be quite disappointing. Any sound samples online, somewhere? Quote

If even Tiberi and Verve have concerns about the SQ,, then those of us without a financial (or as potential buyers,a negative financial stake🙂) surely should. I love Trane, but I'm not optimistic about this coming down well. Benedetti Parker's seem like a reasonable best case secenario. We'll know more in April, can assume that the RSD release with be the ceiling for SQ. Quote
Late Posted February 11 Report Posted February 11 At least we should be able to audition the Tiberi tapes (at some point) on YouTube before pulling the trigger on a box set. Sometimes, when I'm just about to make a CD purchase, I hop over to YouTube for another discretionary listen. I've ended up saving $ (e.g. no purchase) this way.🤨 Quote
