Consonance: Live at the Jazz Showcase is the first ever release of saxophone titan Joe Henderson and his quartet featuring pianist Joanne Brackeen, bassist Steve Rodby and drummer Danny Spencer, captured live at Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase in Chicago, IL in February of 1978. The limited-edition 180g, 3-LPset was mastered from the original tapes by George Klabin and John Koenig, with lacquers cut by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab in Salina, KS, and pressed at Quebec's boutique audiophile pressing plant Le Vinylist. This is part of Resonance's debut launch of releases from Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase archives, marking the beginning of what will hopefully be a long line of incredible releases from the club's archives. The deluxe package includes newly curated liner notes by co-producer John Koenig, plus interviews with Joanne Brackeen, Steve Rodby, Danny Spencer, Joe Segal's son Wayne Segal and more.

Resonance's facebook page has this:

Quote

“Joe's archives comprise one of the greatest libraries of previously unissued jazz recordings in existence and we're very lucky that these documents were made and preserved,” says Feldman, who first discovered the treasure trove of recordings when he was introduced to Segal in 2011. The vinyl will be available for Record Store Day, April 18, 2026 with a 2-CD set to follow on April 24, what would have been Joe Segal’s 100th birthday.

So at least there will be a cd version which presumably won't break the bank.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m unquestionably ALL in on getting this on CD.

But with a total of 5(!) tunes that are all 22+ minutes each — by just a quartet (Joe + piano trio) — that’s gotta mean a LOTTA bass solos.

And by a bass player I've never heard off.  But I'm also all in anyways!  The bigger fear for me is the drum solos.

Joe Henderson in 1978 may not have enjoyed the widespread popularity he later achieved, but I believe he was in excellent form as a player. Also, Joanne Brackeen was at her peak.

Personally, when I think of Steve Rodby, I recall him playing electric bass on Pat Metheny's best albums. However, it seems he originally played acoustic bass.  I've heard a live recording of Joe Henderson in France from around the same time (November 1978), and Rufus Reid was on bass for that session (same pianist and drummer). Since Rodby was the house bassist at the Jazz Showcase, he might have been filling in for Reid. Danny Spencer wasn't particularly distinctive, but he was a competent drummer.

Exactly (emphasis added). I only know of his playing with Metheny.

Danny Spencer was the drummer on the Kenny Cox Blue Note sides.

Thanks.  I have those Kenny Cox albums with Spencer (though I couldn't have named him), but nothing Rodby shows as playing on (though I do have some of the Eliane Elias albums where he has production credits).

Yeah, I much prefer 1978 Joe Henderson to his "popular" years on Verve.  And I agree with you on Brackeen, who is such a strong pianist.

Given Zev's track record, are we sure about the personnel?

Probably not but it won't be Gene Harris instead of Brackeen so ... I'm out.

Anyway, I am in for the CD version.

Me too. Resonance isn’t particularly known for putting out high quality vinyl editions.

If it appears to be Dexter Gordon with George Cables on piano that would be fine as well 😅

The one time I saw Dexter was at the Jazz Showcase, but Kirk Lightsey, David Eibankd, and Eddie Gladden. That would be fine too!

But as long as Eddie Gladden is there, all should be well.
