  1. I had found Monks 1954 solo session from Paris difficult to find but recently snagged it at Fopp for £5 ( vogue digi pack). They seemed to have plenty (Edinburgh branch)
  2. I had forgotten how good the 50s Mobley set was. Played bits of it the last 3 nights and it really is a great set. Like most Mosaics best taken an album or a few tracks at a time. I enjoyed the "Curtain Call" session with Dorham particularly.
  3. If I can get back from the David Binney gig in time I'll be recording this one to MD or CD. The last broadcast Stanko did on Beeb a few years ago was excellent and I play it a fair bit.
  4. Impulse buy, saw it in Fopp, I was attracted to hear more Koller also its was on vinyl and I have been having great fun from my new turntable/phonostage.

that "not buying thing" is going pretty well, perhaps I should try it too
  6. The Marsh/Brown thing is I think pretty special. The new FS "Complete 1956/7" is a must have even if it's not complete (missing two takes from the Jazz in 2 cities session) Another not mentioned is the excellent Konitz/Marsh date on Pausa ( rec Ronnie Scotts 1976?) on Lp only as far as I am aware.
  7. Picked this up on 2 LP the other day ( it has a track not on the CD) Its very good indeed. Sound quality is fantastic and playing excellent. Don't know a whole lot about any of the players but this is a winner. Th e whole thing is well programmed. I usually avoid compilations but this is highly recommended.
  8. that new head seems to drop off ....cool...who's head is it anyway
  9. not sure why this session should be getting special treatment as it's only an average date. IMO
  10. because, often less is more
  11. picked up this release on new 2LP set, it's very good, pretty accessible stuff so not sure how representative it is of the artists in question.
  12. seeing Binney on Friday with his quartet, should be good, spinning "South" in the car and it reallly is a great disc- good arrangemnts, nice pacing and soloing. I havent heard anything by him that's not been excellent. Anyone heard his disc on Auand (Italy)?

Not exactly familiar but I been getting enjoyment from "Traffic" on Frame ( quartet with Bobby Few , recorded Paris 1980?). Some singing a la Shepp but none the worse for it
  14. how about those multiple alternates of a blues number (Upstairs?/Downstairs?)on "Fuschia swing song" by Sam Rivers, you get a real sense of progress towards the finished article. As I noted above I was intrigued to hear Levy use electric piano only on the last alternate take (before the master) , wonder why he tried it.....oh that's creativity for you....
  15. I was a little disappointed by "Peace Pipe" initially but have really warmed to it's "worldly" charms. Tiger is perhaps stronger but Pipe does give a sense of his broad artistic vision. Hope he's got something new coming soon.
  16. This take appears to have electric piano unlike the other takes, dont hear any "spikes" from it.
  17. I went for "Let it Bleed", best album they have ever made? At school 20 odd years ago the photographer and artistic director responsible for the "Let it Bleed" cover came to give a talk on commercial photography. Apparently the Stones ( or some of them) were present at the photo shoot. The album back cover shows the "cake" from the front all smashed up. Once the cover photos had been taken Keith R wanted to wreck the "cake" for the back cover and had to be persuaded that in fact the destruction had to be more orderly. Classic tunes, classic cover,

I also finally listened to this one, and I found it quite nice. Nothing groundbreaking -tunefull energetic "classic" free jazz, but stiull a nice sincere music, and a lot of fun. The vibes player on this one plays in Vandermarks "School Days"ensemble. The rest are unknown to me
  22. the recorded sound quality is very high, sounds full and rich. It makes interesting comparison to the "Star Highs" session. Hank Jones on the later gives a rocco classical feeling compared to Levy's approach on "All Music". It'll take some time to absorb fully especially all the bonus cuts but I love it already. I recently got "Apogee" which sounds rather hectic and takes some getting used to its high pressure sound stage. Thanks again Chuck
  23. Having Spam here in Scotland for lunch, never tasted better IMO. This is one hell of a release. !!!
  24. I passed through Bergen about 20 years ago when inter railing with my wife. The scenery is certainly spectacular. Bergen it self seemed most remarkable for the number of stoned addicts rolling around the city parks, shooting up in broad daylight !! An eye opener for an eighteen year old.
  25. I, Eye, Aye: Live at the Montreux Jazz Festival, 1972 I like this one a lot, plenty of energy
