my wife bought it for herself only 3 days into my BN boycott. It's not bad quite enjoyable really and certainly not torture compared to loads of pop stuff. I have since abandone my BN boycott in theory, but haven't picked up any stuff on BN as I am no longer aware of their release schedule.

Name some Blue Note cds you find overrated

A.T's Delight. is great, Dave Burns is interesting and although its nothing out of this world it's a worthy BN date. I find some of Horace Silvers dates a bit tiresome, things like "Silvers Serenade" and "Tokyo Blues". His style was pretty repetitive and too many of his originals are too similar. It's probably more a phenomena of being recorded extensively rather than artistic stagnation. I do play these disc but only a few tracks at a time. Sides such as "Finger Poppin" and "Song for my father" , "Jody Grind" seem much fresher by comparison. -

Jimmy Smiths "Open House"/ "Plain Talk" Stanley Turrentine, "Rough N Tumble" are just dull -
Good idea chosing something new even if I have no chance of getting this in weeks.

Jeff Palmer "Island Universe" on Soulnote with Rashid Ali, Arthur Blythe, intense post Larry Young B3 combo. Not for the faint hearted. on a less intense note Lou Levy "Ya Know" excellent date- not sure if this is in fact OOP. If it is then his "Solo Scene" RCA 1956 is also well worth it.

Dukes early stuff on BN is pretty good but look at the syrupy arrangements on Turrentines "Rough N Tumble". This is one of BN worst ever IMO . He was better earlier and in smaller groups "Wahoo" ans "Sweet Honey Bee" are VG+.

Boogaloo must be JP's best BN issue. Pity about the terrible title - any one buying blind would have very low expectations on the basis of the title alone.

This set is way better than I expected. I have the single CD of the Friday set from the late 80s. That single disc really never caught my attention. This new release is in such good sound its pretty unbelievable. Kelly is a real star and sounds far more modern than his normally bluesy approach allows. Mobley is no slouch either burns like magnesium and plays a great solo on Neo (Teo?) . If there is anything to regret it's that Cobb plays is pretty straight for most of the time. He drives the band well enough but without much flair. At £18 a complete bargain- BN take note.

Sorry Chuck but ,what prices for other Uptowns and Nessa CDs

What do you make of this disc. I am undecided, it's either pretty good heavy groove music or it's a crude record from artists you would expect better of. Initially it did appeal but a bit of the novelty is wearing off I fear. Its also quite repetitive. Any thoughts????

Spot on Lon This is an excellent release all partcipants add up to a pretty unique sound I like the originals especially. Rosenwinkel never sounded better IMO

Thanks for picking this,I had paased by this frequently until yesterday when I spent all of £5 on it. Well, well worth it. Much better than the rather tired Satch Plays Fats which is the only other Satch I have from this period. Even Velma what-its-name is inspired on the delightfully wacky "Long gone".Excellent !!!

What is going on- I though CD sales were on the slide, is this a take on best defense is offence ? B) B)

tracks 1,3 and 5 are my favourite (sorry cant recall names) it's got a good groove but critically plenty of interest no cheese which is excellent and amazing as I thought all B3 albums had to have some fromage to some extent ( all that is except Larry Young and Jeff Palmer) so bravo B) B)

It's a fine line and a highly subjective one as to what constitutes spam but I havent' seen any here or at AAJ . As a listener I really appreciate knowing about releases from board members. There are heeps of new and reissued music out there so it's great to have music that you can connect to if only because you feel you "know" the muscicians through their posts. It would be of great regret if people like Brian P, Trumpet Guy, Organissimo, Jim or Chuck were not able to give their releases the minor plugs that they do. Back in the BNBB there was some real spamming by some idiot who thought it clever to post the same message repeatedly in loads of fora. long live spam-lite as it were

Has anybody else heard thsi recent(ish) disc. I am not familiar with Laster but picked this up on the basis of Cuong Vu's presence. This is an exciting if quite challenging disc witha some what unusual instrumentation but it works very well. Trumpetter Vu is a curiosity for sure. I'm not sure he's found his niche yet. He has powerful chops and yet his own projects such as Bound(Omnitone) and another date on Knitting factory sound rather unsettling. He works well within this context. any one else/ Bryan Carrott - Marimba, Vibraphone Erik Friedlander - Cello Andy Laster - Composer, Sax (Baritone) Michael Sarin - Drums, Temple Blocks Cuong Vu - Trumpet

If Bird and Diz were Bebops parents then surely Klook was the midwife. I can't imagine bebop without Clarke. He seems to overlooked , probably because he emigrated.

too right Lon, Mosaic ought to be bold enough to start championing unsung artists and sessions from the 70s and 80s. I'd go for these without hesitation.

I need help with the Green set. I have the TOCJ 45 Session and the Soul Stirrin Conn and love them. Is it worth the ££ for the remaining 2 and half sessions? AMG doesnt rate the Quebec session. Is this fair? Like wise I have the Weston Highlife/Uhuru Roulette disc. The first session isn't my idea of fun, the second is a lot better. The sound on this disc isn't exactly great. How does the rest of the Mosaic Weston measure up and how is the sound compared to the earlier CD reissue I have.

for my money I think the horrible covers , lack of alternates do a real disservice to the BN legacy, I' ll be avoiding these

my fairly basic Marantz set up sounds warmer (better) if left on more or less permanently. Although I do turn amp and CD off if I am recording an FM broadcast on the Beeb.

I am not really much of vocal jazz fan. Norah sings a nice tune but that's it. Rene Marie "Live at Jazz Standard " on the other hand is utterly fantastic and that's me speaking as real sceptic re vocal jazz. Amazing control, soul and real improvisational skills not unlike Betty Carter. Highly recommended.
