No Dewey for sure, tenor saxes include Tony Malaby and Chris Cheek, both excellent players IMO
-
I'm catching the LO 2004 tonight, last night Malaby, Fowkes and Matt Wilson put on a great show of Malaby's tunes.

Charlie Byrd:Blues Sonata (Riverside Mono) green label-Orpheum £2.50 great sound and Byrd doesn't sound half as cheesy as I expected- nice album. I recall mention elsewhere regarding "green label" riversides- can't remember what the significance was- perhaps someone can enlighten me. Also found five Woody Herman Phillips Lps from 1962-1963, all in excellent condition ( UK pressings)

I have this on a French CD, good session, aren't they all !!!!

If only I could, the Classics are a bit pricey as imports. I've a great local record outlet which though completely disorganised has some real gems but no BNs at all. They have a huge amount of vinyl at £3 per LP or £5 for doubles. Picked up original pressings of "The Big Challenge" and "Earl Hines Paris 1965 solos" at those prices. I can get 6 or 7 LPs for the price of one Classic !!! I dont mind hit or miss in terms of quality at £3 per disc but at £20 plus I get more picky ( which isn't as much fun )

Yes, Mobley really impresses me with class and melody on this one. Sonically, I'll say this, the highs are out of whack and it's not an LP I can sit through play after play without being distracted by the unnaturalness. I love playing it once and then moving on to something less abrasive in the upper mid-range and higher. YMMV This is one of only two Classics I have ( I have no other BN vinyl at all ) sound is ok in my book but it isn't as knock out as I expected it to be. Same goes for "Introducing Johnny Griffin" sounds ok, but not amazingly better than CD. I don't think it's my set up as other LP versus CD comparisons more oftn than not favour LP.

These nor the MPS reissues seem to hitting the UKs shores, I'll wait a little longer. All these Blakey Paris sessions is a bit confusing if you're not paying attention !!!
-
Here's a UK Impulse of an uncertain age, the sleeve is gatefold thick card type and says made in USA but the LP is from the UK
-
I can't wait, I loved the last three Ellington reissues, a really good quality product No UK release date as far as I can see. Amazon UK isn't listing them yet !!!

and just to be clear that reason is......not CP ... but something else....Have I got that correct?

any idea what it went for, just curious, I paid 8 euro for my copy, its a pretty quiet pressing .(not sure how it'd be officially graded)

Really? That baffles me. It’s one thing when big labels, for whom pop is the main priority, panic and slap copy protection on their releases, and as a consequence it affects their jazz releases too, since they lump jazz together with pop. But Fresh Sound is not the kind of label one would expect to make this move. This can only hurt sales for them. By the way, I checked some recent FSNT releases on amazon.de, and saw no mention of “Kopiergeschützt” there (at least not yet). As I’ve understood it, that must be indicated in Germany. surely a joke ?

Not sure if these really count as great find but I was very pleased, from a street market in Provence , France Daniel Fillipacchi presente; Art Blakey et les jazz-messengers au club St.Germain- ( original pressing in excellent condition)- RCA 430.043 Lou Bennett Quartet- Amen- RCA ( original pressing) 430.050

Just picked a lovely LP version of the Big Challenge- original pressing I think in mint condition. Also found a double LP called "The Big 18" with Rex Stewart, Lawrence Brown, Johnny Guarnieri, Buck Clayton and others. Recorded in June/July 1958 it seems to be a tribute to various big bands, a bit bland and souless, everyone plays well but theband seems despite the line up to have little character of its own. Anyone else heard this one?

Is that the one based on the Rega P2? I took the plunge in Jan this year due entirely to this forum and got a Rega P3 , i've not looked back, I love the sound of vinyl, the feel. I'll be upgrading the tone arm/ rca cabling later this year but for now it's sublime. Sadly it makes my CD player seem uninviting.... bit of snag given the number of CDs I have...

AOTW June 29-July 5 Warne Marsh / All Music
Clunky replied to Peter Johnson's topic in Album Of The Week
Warne also does the same thing with pitch. Do you have to understand this concept to appreciate the music more thoroughly.?? In all seriousness as a non musician i really struggle with the theory of what's going on most of the time. Does that matter? I simply respond on the simple level of whether I like what I hear. I like what I hear here. -
Maria Schneider - forget looking in your CD shop!
Clunky replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in New Releases
I'm taking this off on holiday with me to get better acquainted, plus some Woody Herman, Fly, Tony Malaby, Jess Stacy, John Lewis and Warne Marsh. -

Clunky replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in New Releases
Well this is my first exposure to Maria S. I've not heard a note until this CD but I was aware of her reputation. There is clearly lots to listen to here and first spin last night sounds very promising indeed. Might even manage to get my head around wordless vocals !! -
thanks, might manage that

Is there anywhere you can see the route planned, I'm off shortly to the Mount Ventoux region of Provence ( not a good spot for a certain british cyclist- I gather). I wondered if it might be passing close by?

too much time with the humourous rodent thread methink I've not fully submerged just yet! Not to get too distracted by whether rats can swim or not, you do need to listen to this. Warne has beauty in his tone and phrasing that is simply inspiring.
