  1. That does look tasty. Did you ever see the film version equivalent (Marclay's The Clock)? I think this was at MoMA and San Francisco MoMA and probably a few other museums. https://www.moma.org/calendar/exhibitions/1308 I finished Shteyngart's Absurdistan and am just starting Lermontov's A Hero of Our Time. I actually did seek out an older copy with the Edward Gorey cover, though it's certainly not one of his best covers...
  2. I think there is a bit of this old man yelling at clouds going on here, but there have also been some serious studies showing that, in musical terms, the hits of the 2010s and 2020s are much less complex than those from the 1960s, 1970s or even 1980s. There is a dumbing down effect that is at play, and it isn't simply a case of "it was better in my day"... What's sort of interesting or ironic is that there is also a real fear of being sued for copyright theft (often wrongly) and that would seem to me to call for more complex, not less complex, songs in order to demonstrate originality.
  3. Ragazze Quartet: But Not My Soul. String Quartets by Florence Price & Dvorák.
  4. I don't think I've seen this before. I'll have to add it to the list. Currently working away at I.B. Singer's Scum. I'd say there are significant echoes of Joseph Roth going on in this one (which is a positive for me anyway).
  5. Neil confirms it is him. He was playing with Woody Shaw on that tour. He had no idea about this release and isn't getting paid anything. It's probably legal (a radio broadcast or something), but it isn't right. Anyway, he knows about it now and get in touch with them if he chooses.
  6. RIP - Also very sorry to hear this. Mostly interacted with him on the What are you reading? thread, where he was working his way through Graham Greene and had just started in on Eric Ambler.
  7. Both look very interesting and I'll see about getting them through Dusty Groove. The bassist Neil Swason on the Shaw date is surely Neil Swainson, which makes this an even more compelling pick-up. He's been playing a fair bit locally these past few months, and I expect to see him this Wed. at the Rex and maybe again at the very end of the month.
  8. Just starting Rushdie's Fury. It's entertaining so far.
  9. 👍 There was a comprehensive Motley exhibit that went around the States in 2014-5. I managed to catch it at the Chicago Cultural Center. It's documented here: https://whitney.org/exhibitions/archibald-motley#exhibition-catalogue I was just in Montreal checking out a well thought-out exhibit that pairs Georgia O'Keefe and Henry Moore. Really nice. It runs through June 2. https://www.mbam.qc.ca/en/exhibitions/okeeffe-and-moore/
  10. Friday I saw Drive-Away Dolls. It was entertaining but not a great movie. But it was apparently intended from the first to be a B Movie with a lesbian slant. Despite it being set in 1999, you never see a single person in a car with a seat belt. Then today I saw Kurosawa's High and Low at a 2nd run house. This was the first time seeing it. This is a great movie, though I personally preferred the second half, which is more of a police procedural.
  11. I'm pretty sure I'm in but shipping up to Canada is such a killer. Depending on what is feasible, I may ultimately need to use a US address.
  12. So sorry that I only got around to listening to this tonight, and there are only 5 days left to listen to it. (I think it has been up for 3 weeks already.) While there are only two live cuts in the program, there is also a pretty interesting interview with two long-time Arkestra members: Knoel Scott and Michael Ray. Link here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001q14k
  13. I think my introduction to Was Not Was was "Hello, Dad, I'm in Jail," which was the soundtrack to some very freaky video or film short. I don't know if this actually ran as a sort of trailer before an art film (I would have seen in university) or maybe it was even at an art gallery. I see there is some version up on Youtube, though I couldn't swear this is the version I saw way back when: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6bfpgTgRPk In general, I liked their music, which was sort of alternative-lite.
  14. I got about 2/3 of the way through East of Eden on a very long bus ride. Will wrap it up in next few days. I haven't decided whether to watch the movie, which only covers a relatively small chunk of the novel.
  15. I haven't tried Youtube, which may or may not be available, but usually raises red flags. So far, I am able to access and play music from Bandcamp. (No idea how long this loophole will be available.) I have a decent Bandcamp collection, and I suppose I will start buying more music that way, so long as I can listen at work, though this of course doesn't address the Mosaic issue...
