  1. Just polled four friends. One says he's never heard of either of them.
  2. My heart is absolutely breaking from the stories I'm hearing. "I had her hand, but I lost it." "I'm sure my wife will contact me when she is able." It's horrifying, incomprehensible, and so terribly sad. To be sure, there will be amazing stories that come out of this, but for now my heart is heavy and my thoughts go out to all who have been affected.
  3. Wow--shows how long it's been since I've been back. Closed since 2007! The east side store is still open... Music Millenium NW 23rd Closing
  4. I know there are a few PDX members here. I'm in town for a few days and would love to see what's what. I was shocked this morning to discover Music Millenium on 23rd is closed (maybe I shouldn't be shocked, but I always liked that place). Always found everyday music to be spotty/overpriced. There was a coop on Hawthorne a few years ago--still going, still worth a visit? Would love any tips. Many thanks!
  5. Has anyone compared the King vs these new reissuses (assuming there's been overlap thus far)? If so, thoughts?
  6. That's insulting. I actually laugh out loud when I see shit like that (usually followed with a barely audible "you gotta be fuckin' kidding me").
  7. Don't know what happened to my response. Will try again! Stumbled across a cache of great stuff at great prices (BN, Impulse, Prestige, mostly original press) at Normals about ten years ago. Went back a couple of years ago and don't remember being as impressed, but the selection was still quite vast. You might give them a shot--they're just a little bit northeast of downtown, if I recall correctly. Normals
  8. 'twould be well worth the trip. Personally, I'd bypass balmer in the classical department and head straight here. The most prominent in the US: http://en.wikipedia....iki/Marin_Alsop I will DEFINITELY be trekking up to Baltimore to hear her at least a couple times a year, once I get settled in DC in a couple months. As long as you're heading north up I-95 (or even the Baltimore-Washington Parkway), you should continue on up to Philly a couple of times to catch the Fabulous Philadelphians in Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center. You might even convince me--and Peter Johnson--to go along with you.
  9. And by the way--he's quite extraordinary. Except for this youngster, who will become Music Director of the Philadelphia Orchestra in 2012: http://en.wikipedia....zet-S%C3%A9guin
  10. Jim, when's your next midatlantic east coast swing?
  11. Hey Rolf--you still can! Come over to Annapolis--Ram's Head--on 6/29. We'll be there! (Of course, it happens to be the same week as Induction, but there are still some rooms to be had, if you act fast!).
  12. +1 These days, it's just a block from our apartment--who knew, as a kid growing up in Portland, Oregon, that THAT would happen! Mine too. We're all (inevitably) aging.
  13. Well, never let a crisis go to waste...saw the motherfuckers at the gas station by my office jacking the price from $3.72 to $3.80 this morning. $4.00/gallon, here we come--again. How's that reducing our dependency on foreign oil going? Really concerned about the impact on this super shaky economic "recovery."
  14. I'm hoping to be there. Will let you know. Thanks for the heads up.
  15. Hey, thanks for that! I was there on Saturday--very enjoyable sets.
  16. Well, it was more than well worth the trip from Philadelphia to see the band last night. Thanks to Bertrand for his help making the gig happen; Rolf, a pleasure to meet you finally! The set was extraordinary--from the first note, you knew, blindfolded, it was Butch--that huge, fat, walking bass tone. Brilliant. Freddie Redd sounded positively Ellingtonian. The band played a mix of Redd originals and standards--running it out with a killing version of Take the A Train. What a tremendous night!!
  17. Assume you'll be at the show tonight, Rolf? Looking forward to meeting some o board peeps. I picked up 4.
  18. Can't believe there hasn't been more interest in this. I'm coming down from Philly and staying overnight. Bertrand, I'll be there for both sets. Do you know whether I can get a ticket for the first set and pay an extra cover/stay for the second, or should I buy tickets for both sets? I can't get anyone to answer the phone. I still have your number from missing you at the Wayne Shorter set in Philly, so will try to call you.
  19. Looks like they cropped Farmer's picture from the Modern Art album. LOL--they did!
  20. In true Blue Note fashion, it looks like it's credited to "Hank Modley" (who is still no match for Honk Moseley).
  21. Just chiming in to say that if that's what autotranslation is up to these days, well, DAMN. Not too shabby. Don't really want to be a one language society, however.
