duaneiac Posted August 26, 2021 Report Posted August 26, 2021 I don't know how many takes they did that day, but when the tape stopped rolling on this one, surely everybody in the room (including the seemingly immortal Roy Haynes) must have known they had just recorded a stone cold classic. Quote

This is another musician who was presented at Herwig Wurzer´s Jazz Shop. That Macedonia stuff is great, isn´t one of the tunes that wonderful "saga secorama". And the other , more "american" thing was an Enja recording "After Hours". And I love his trumpet sound....., once I heard that Miles also liked him very much and was the first who told him to go to the States. Quote

BillF Posted August 26, 2021 Report Posted August 26, 2021 (edited) Great DiRubbo quartet session last night at Smalls. From his recording history looks like he's had a long association with last night's sidemen, Rudy Royston and Brian Charette. Edited August 26, 2021 by BillF Quote
Rabshakeh Posted August 26, 2021 Report Posted August 26, 2021 Philly Gumbo Vol. 2 on Criss Cross. A nice recent recommendation from @Larry Kart, for which thank you. Quote
jazzbo Posted August 26, 2021 Report Posted August 26, 2021 Lee Morgan "The Complete Live at the Lighthouse" disc 6 Really enjoying this set. The sound has definitely been "modernized." In a good way. I really admire Benny Maupin's work and having more is . . . more! Quote
Rabshakeh Posted August 26, 2021 Report Posted August 26, 2021 Horace Tapscott Sextet - Dial 'B' for Barbra (Nimbus West, 1981) One of my favourite records from that LA scene. Quote
JSngry Posted August 26, 2021 Author Report Posted August 26, 2021 Among other thigs, it can be a CTI record for people who hate CTI records! Of all the Ra records where listening to the inside of the music takes you deeper to the point than does just staying on the surface, this one makes it easier than most. Then again, that's true of most all music, the surface is where they get your attention, the inside is where they keep it...to do what it will... Quote
jazzbo Posted August 26, 2021 Report Posted August 26, 2021 I need to revisit the new release of Languidity again very soon. A Sun Ra album that is inescapable once you've really felt the recording. Now, a shift in gears perhaps, but music I love as well. Duke Ellington, “Volume 6: 1929” Masters of Jazz (Media7, France) Sometimes I try to imagine how this music would see and feel like performed by these guys in 1929. I cannot conjure an accurate image, but the imagining is fun. It has an impact for me now, and imagine an even greater impact to many at that time. Quote

Rabshakeh Posted August 26, 2021 Report Posted August 26, 2021 Paul Bley, Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny and Bruce Ditmas - Jaco (Improvising Artists, 1974) My first time listening to this. Pastorius is absolutely great, but Bley and particularly Metheny really aren't there at all. It's like very weak Weather Report. Quote
