21 CD box of Art Ensemble of Chicago on ECM

81 posts in this topic

Seems to be a straight reissue of everything Art Ensemble-related on ECM, including the recent Roscoe Mitchell and Jack DeJohnette Made in Chicago releases. Includes a 200 page booklet! There are still a few of these that I haven't gotten yet, and at around $110 or so on Amazon I might get this.

Wow - tempting !

I was pondering an LP copy of ‘Urban Bushmen’ at about a quarter the price of this set the other day. So, good bang for buck.

That "and associated ensembles" is really pushing the envelope as wide as possible it would seem.  Got most of it, possibly all, on the original discs or vinyl I think.

It's a good per-disc price, but I think I have it all? Is there a list somewhere?

Tempting, but I have most if not all of the actual AEC CD's on ECM, and believe the "associated" titles would probably have diminishing returns for me, and need to draw the line somewhere.  But very tempting at that price, and a further price drop could certainly do me in...

It’s tempting for me - as I only have the two Lester Bowie Brass Fantasy titles and these are on vinyl.

Plus - the booklet. Likely only half of it in English but, even so..

Hell yeah! Most of the time in the collectable Jazz pantheon you’re usually looking at $20+ per disc.

This is an outstanding value. Hell, I may even spring for it.

I went ahead and pre-ordered it.  I can cancel if I change my mind, and really, how far wrong can I go on it?

For anyone who doesn't already have most or all of this (I do), it's a no-brainer.

can't find list anywhere yet, but i'm also wondering what could be in the 200 page booklet. New essay, all pictures? I'll wait until more info is available before ordering

I wonder if the booklet will be one of those ECM designer minimalist things with half a dozen words and a pic on each page, repeated for English/German. I’m optimistic though !

I only have one of the ECM whitebox reissue series of which this looks to be the very big brother.  In that set the booklet has a 10.5 page essay, in English only, on Codona with 5 pages of photos and two of discographical info so I think your optimism may be well founded across 200 pages.

What isn't included is the original cover art but as a Mosaic aficionado I'm sure that'll be OK with you...but drives me mad

I too used this link and would like to thank you for the heads up.  I'm hoping there might be a Kenny Wheeler or Tomasz Stanko cube up ECM's sleeve.

Thanks - I’ll be happy to live without the cover art, as long as the sonics are good. I have one of those smaller whiteboxes, more than happy with it.

Made In Chicago is one of my favorite albums in recent memory. Glad they are including it.

Well hell, that's more coverage than I had expected. I have a lot of it on LP, and that importcd price is < $4/disc. I'd be a fool not to do that deal right now.

The DeJohnette New Directions CD's seal the deal for me.

Impossible to not get this even though I don’t like the way ECM made these guys sound on record. I always thought Urban Bushmen if it was recorded as the band must have sounded live would have been an all-time great record.

Nice price, although none of the AEC ECM releases are that good, IMHO. As far as I am concerned, with AEC the earlier - the better.

So 15 or 16 new Art Ensemble albums? Now *that* would be a feast! :w

Quite to the contrary I`m also fond of post ECM material .... fi "From The Ancient To The Future" (DIW) - saw the AEC with this program live in 1986 @ Vienna and they were on fire....
